8 decisions in Cowboys history, revisited (you decide)

8. Keep Gailey. He was better than the alternative (Campo). Or at least hire Belichick.

I don't think Jones had a choice here. Gailey is a good coach, but he was absolutely the wrong coach for Troy Aikman, who was extremely uncomfortable in Gailey's offensive system. Aikman had three Super Bowl rings, and at the time was our best hope for another. So, Gailey had to go.

Ironically, Aikman didn't last another full season, as his back problems and concussion issues cut his career short.

Strangely enough, despite all the dislike of Jerry Jones on this message board, it seems that most people still preferred that the Cowboys be sold to Jones in 1989 than to anyone else.

You can't turn down 3 Super Bowls.

Even though all he did was hire his college roommate to coach the team, the same philosophy that led to Barry Switzer. Still, it's 3 Super Bowls.

1. Randy Moss or Greg Ellis? Randy Moss

2. Fire Landry, or keep Landry? (If keep Landry, how long - mid-1990s?) Keep Landry, he had a plan never got to inplement it. Keep till his plan had a chance to be fully realized to see if it was working if not then fire him but do it with dignity afterall Tom Landry was a war hero before he was our coach and deserved better than he got.

3. Sell the Cowboys to Jones in 1989 (who would hire Johnson,) or to another buyer instead? Sell to Jones

4. Build massive Cowboys Stadium, or a smaller, more traditional venue? The current stadium.

5. Draft Walter Payton with the No. 2 pick in 1975, or Randy White? The Manster

6. Morris Claiborne, or Dre Kirkpatrick and keep a 2nd-round pick? Morris Claiborne

7. Sign Terrell Owens, or not? Sign Owens

8. Fire Chan Gailey, or keep Gailey? Keep Gailey

There are decisions that were obviously good (such as the Herschel Walker trade) so they're not being featured. Same goes for decisions that were obviously bad, such as the Roy Williams and Joey Galloway trades.

My own take:

1. Moss
2. Release Landry, but in a more tactful way
3.
Sell to Jones. The 1990s dynasty might not have taken place without Johnson as coach.
4. Build the huge stadium
5. White, but only because Tony Dorsett was a great RB.
6. Kirkpatrick and the 2nd round pick
7. Sign Owens
8. Keep Gailey

1 randy moss
2 fire landry i think landry should have been replaced after the 1986 season. losing the playoff game to the rams in 85 and not making the playoffs the following season was enough for a change. i totally respect landry but he stayed to long in the end the franchised suffered because of it.
3 sell to jones he was going to give the most money for the team.
5 randy white: dt like him do not come along every year.
6 do not know if claiborne will be better then kirkpatrick right now to make a opinion.
7 no way on owens this team did nothing with him. parcellsmighthadthe team back in the playoffs reguardless of having owens on the team or not.
8 keep gailey atleast one more year. he took the team to playoffs two years in a row even though we lost both times.

9) Staubach or Morton? Guess that was an easy one in retrospect, but what would you have done then?

10) To Deion or not to Deion?

11) Fire Landry or give him a 10-year contract in 1964?

1. Randy Moss or Greg Ellis?
Moss

2. Fire Landry, or keep Landry? (If keep Landry, how long - mid-1990s?)
Fire Landry, but be way, way more respectful about it.

3.
Sell the Cowboys to Jones in 1989 (who would hire Johnson,) or to another buyer instead?
Sell to Jones

4. Build massive Cowboys Stadium, or a smaller, more traditional venue?
Build the big stadium

5. Draft Walter Payton with the No. 2 pick in 1975, or Randy White?
Randy White

6. Morris Claiborne, or Dre Kirkpatrick and keep a 2nd-round pick?
Claiborne

7. Sign Terrell Owens, or not?
Don't sign him

8. Fire Chan Gailey, or keep Gailey?
Keep Gailey, give him the Campo years.

1. Randy Moss or Greg Ellis?
Keith Brooking was the guy I wanted. Moss was the WRONG choice in 1998 despite how he turned out. The culture in Dallas was NOT conducive to his success back then. He had the right mentors in Minnesota in Jake Reed and Chris Carter and we did not.

Ellis was a good player for us but I would have gone with Brooking instead.

2. Fire Landry, or keep Landry? (If keep Landry, how long - mid-1990s?)
I would have kept Tom Landry for as long as he wanted to coach. I have never agreed that the game had passed him by but that our drafts sucked for too long and we really lacked quality players.

3. Sell the Cowboys to Jones in 1989 (who would hire Johnson,) or to another buyer instead?
I would have preferred another buyer without a doubt!

4. Build massive Cowboys Stadium, or a smaller, more traditional venue?
I'm fine with the stadium. If the owner, whoever that is, wants to spend his money on it that's great!

5. Draft Walter Payton with the No. 2 pick in 1975, or Randy White?
I would much rather have Randy White and Tony Dorsett than just Walter Payton. Dorsett was not much of a drop off from Walter but there was no Randy White available in 1977 or anyone even remotely close to his level in that draft.

6. Morris Claiborne, or Dre Kirkpatrick and keep a 2nd-round pick?
Morris Claiborne without a doubt. Dre seems like he'll be a headcase/me-first kind of guy.

7. Sign Terrell Owens, or not?
ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!!!

8. Fire Chan Gailey, or keep Gailey?
He should have never been hired in the first place.

The consensus seems to be:

1. Moss
2. Fire Landry
3. Sell to Jones
4. Build large stadium
5. Randy White
6. Claiborne
7. Sign Owens
8. (Undecided)

I'm shocked everyone is all for the current stadium.
