I don't really keep track, but I am sure I drink somewhere from 8 glasses to maybe a gallon of water a day. I do it because it's healthy and because I like water and when I am really thristy from being out in the sun or something nothing is better than some nice water. Also if I am out walking in the hot sun for hours I will drink a lot more water than I would if I was sitting in the house reading a book.

It washes out your electrolytes. It results in something called hyper-hydration intoxication I think. You need sodium and potassium for intercellular transport of just about anything and everything.

Too much water is a bad deal, but it take a lot.

That is not going to happen to most people. It can happen to marathon runners who have sweat off a lot of their salts and then try to rehydrate too quickly and even then it is a rare occurrence.

The lady that died doing the radio bit was just a fluke thing. Plus that was drinking a lot of water at one time. Spread that same amount of water over a whole day and it won't do anything harmful to your body. I think most people would throw up if they tried to drink as much water as that lady did. They would puke way before their bodies had hyper-hydration.

There is nothing wrong with using the 8 glasses(8 oz.) of water a day as a guide. That is 1/2 gallon a day. No one knows why this particular amount was chosen, but that doesn't matter. Some people may drink slightly more and some slightly less. Most people will handle it just fine with the only real side effect is having to go piss a few more times a day. An inconvenience, but not deadly.

Why is it hard to drink 8 glasses of water in a day, when most of us could drink 8 bottles of beer in a 2-4 session and not think twice about it?

Has anyone been able to pull that off? And for how long?

I heard it's important, so I'm trying it today for the 1st time. I've been drinking half a gallon of water a day until today, and now I'm on my 5th glass of water. It's terrible. I have to piss every 10 minutes. Well, not exactly, but you get my point.

BTW I'm not trying to pass a pee test. Just trying to get rid of some blackheads.
I drink a lot of water...however.....

8 glasses of water per day is an old and unjustified recommendation--which now has zero data to back it up (it never did in the past either, but was some sort of guestimate).

So don't worry about it. In fact there is a lot recent evidence that suggests it could actually do more harm than good. Unlike in the past, Multiple real studies have now been done on the topic and they keep saying water is good but 8 glasses is over the top. And of course, the type of water you drink is paramount if you drink a lot of it...otherwise your just poisoning yourself.

Google the topic sometime...you'll see that 8 glasses is a crock.

I read somewhere that you're supposed to drink a glass of water right before you go to bed. Yeah, right. I would be up all night.

I know it's good to keep yourself hydrated, but I had a feeling all this talk about drinking 8 glasses is bull.

And yes I have to whiz all the time.

Well I guess if you had a hard time drinking that much water a day, you could learn to give yourself IVs. Sure you would still pee a great deal but you would not have to worry about drinking all of that water.

Used to do that in the Army to keep from getting hangovers.

I just know there is no way I could drink that much water a day unless I am doing yard work or something where I am sweating a good deal.

I have also found that I am much better off drinking gatorade after doing the yard work so I keep from getting cramps in my legs later that night.

Well, it's bull in that not everyone loses the same amount of fluids. I actually checked before-and-after yesterday, and I lost almost 5 lbs during my late-afternoon run. That's all fluids that I lost.

If I only drank 8 glasses of water during the summer, I'd probably get dehydrated.

1 gal a day is about right.

I drink that in one gym session.

If you want to actually lean out drinking 1 gal a day for 3 weeks then stepping up to 2 gallons for 1 week then cutting off water and just taking small sips for a week will leave you very dry.

That's how wrestlers, boxers and MMA guys make weight. Normal guys could use it to actually have abs showing for a spring break....

Add salt to the diet for sure if you are drinking this much water.

1 gal a day is very good for you. You need that much or else you are retaining all the water you intake and basically bloating like a chick even without drinking water....

It's BS. I only started hearing about that when bottled water came out. Never heard about that when we were still drinking out of the front yard water hose.

It's eight, eight ounce glasses of water a day. Thats only 64 onces of water. (half a gallon) An eight ounce glass is one of the smaller juice glasses, not the larger 16-20 ounce dinner glasses. You are supposed to drink it throughout the day, not all at once.

Water does many things for you. Flushes your system, increases your metabolism, decreases the feeling of hunger, helps keep you regular, help cushion your joints, helps the immune system, helps circulation, and stablize blood pressure.

As noted about hunger, it's a known fact that some people mistake being thirsty for hunger and end up eating rather that what they should be doing. Drinking water.

Drinking eight, eight ounce glasses of water a day isn't that difficult. If you drink a 20 ounce bottle of watch during the morning hours, one in the afternoon hours, and one in the evening, thats 60 of the 64 ounces they say you should drink. That won't cause you to go to the bathroom 5 times an hour either.

Drinking eight of the larger glasses will.

Not sure why they said to drink water before bed but I know it's an old wives tail. Probably quite smart for people who drink alcohol.

8 glasses is not overkill at all. Not necessary for a guy who doesn't work out but not overkill. The less water you drink the more you retain so your body adjusts. As you turn up intake you will definitely pee a lot at first. You want your body to shed water. It rids you of toxins and helps burn fat.

I guess it's because your mind can get set on something. I drink water all the time so 8 glasses of water is easy for me. But for someone who drinks bear a lot and does not drink plain water the mind might would be more set to tell you it's wants lots of bear rather than lots of water.

8 oz = 1 cup
16 oz = 2 cups = 1 pint
32 oz = 4 cups = 2 pints = 1 qts
128 oz = 16 cups = 8 pints = 4 qts = 1 gallon

This is interesting. What if you're trying to gain weight? is drinking too much water counter productive?

I drink 8-8 oz glasses of water a day without any issue at all. It's not hard to do, it doesn't cause you to pee a ton every hour, if you're spreading the 64 oz out over the entire day.

It's really not that difficult.

He's not talking about traditional weight gain (like, fat/muscle), but rather retained water weight.
