8 Reasons Tyron Smith May Not Be An Option For The Boys

"I could never gain weight at USC," Smith explained. "I stayed off campus and barely had enough money to pay for my place. I had a meal plan to eat once a day. I only had a couple of bucks in my pocket, so I'd eat at like Jack-in-the Box or McDonalds. I was only eating once or twice a day. It was hard to keep that weight on, since I was working out all the time and always running.

So we're supposed to believe that he didn't gain weight in college because he had no meal plan and could only afford to eat one meal a day?

No that means he had one meal guaranteed provided by the school. The other 4-5 meals would have to come out of his own pocket, and since USC has decided to stop paying guys for awhile, sounds like it wasnt steak and eggs every day.

The Smith Critics are getting increasingly desperate...

Yeah, the normal payola had to stop for a while since the NCAA was in town looking around. Smith just had lousy luck to be there at just this time.

The NCAA sanctions didn't take away scholarships of players already on the team, therefore Smith's housing and meal-plan money wouldn't be affected by it.

I've said this before. I think Tyron Smith could be gone before he gets to the #9th pick. I also noted, I would NOT trade with Detroit unless they said they wanted Prince. (as I think they could take Tyron too)

Illegally paying players has nothing to do with their school provided meal plan.

I don't know what that is all about, but it was said that he was eating Micky Ds and stuff rather than a proper diet. (high protein, etc) which would help you gain weight that isn't of the fat variety. Of course, playing football would help him burn that type of fat off. He just wasn't eating properly to gain massive muscle weight. Obviously he got a trainer and a dietitian to prepare for the draft.

D. I dont think anyone is saying he is a finished product. But there seems to be a lot of nit-picking w/ Tyron. First it was "Hes too light, he will never put on weight". Then he puts on the weight in a few weeks(who knew a teenager running non-stop, and eating Ramen noodles would be a little thin) and people say "Well he just put on a bunch of weight, this could throw him all off"

Complaining about Tyron's weight is as pointless as complaining about Von Millers weight, and some here have done plenty of both.

If you just watch both of them play, their strengths and weaknesses are clear as day.

I'm just ready to see both get on the field and play. It should be fun to watch.

The meal plan was part of his scholarship. He said his meal plan was for 1 meal per day provided by the school. The other meals would have to be paid for on his own. A kid that young, who works out that much, should have been eating about 5 meals a day. In the article he is stating that besides the funded meal he was not able to afford much else.

Complaining about his previous weight was a legitimate concern for those to have IMO. But complaining about his ability to actually put more weight on was ill-informed. Many said he would be 300 by (a theoretical) training camp, turns out he did it by the combine.

Someone like Smith would be mandated by the coaching staff to attend his meals, his weight would be carefully monitered and most likely his meals logged. I have a hard time believing he was only eating McDonald's once a day, that might happen at a D-3 school but not at a football powerhouse like USC.

Umm no. He has admitted several times he was eating McDonalds and Burger King. I'm pretty sure USC did not wish their athletes to eat McDonalds and Burger King yet he was.

I have a very hard time believing his scholarship only allowed 1 meal a day, I've never heard of that anywhere. He's making it sound like he was limited to scraps while playing football on scholarship at USC, and that doesn't make any sense.

I'm not saying he didn't eat McDonalds, I'm saying there's no way that he only ate 1 meal a day.

I think weight should be last on the list of things to consider when you're thinking about drafting a guy in the Top 10.

Same here. I've never heard of that before. Even middling programs have had training tables going back decades. My gosh, as a regular college student I got more than one meal a day at the regular cafeteria.

Pete Carroll was on 103.3 yesterday because he's in town for a clinic at TCU, and he said Smith was a great athlete who always had trouble gaining and holding weight. How did he neglect to mention that it was USC's fault because the poor kid had to exist on Filet O' Fishes?

He also said Smith could play LT with some more seasoning, but could play RT in the NFL right now. Said he didn't play LT because they had Charles Brown.

I had heard this too.

I also heard that they didn't switch him to LT last year because they expected him to declare for the NFL draft and they didn't want their LT only to play one year and walk so they gave the job to Matt Kalil preferring to let him play at his spot of experience and to have Matt for at least two years at LT.
