8 Reasons Tyron Smith May Not Be An Option For The Boys

So we're supposed to believe that he didn't gain weight in college because he had no meal plan and could only afford to eat one meal a day?

Since apparently you refuse to take the kid's word for face value, why don't you be a benefit to the board and share your version of what the "truth" is with everyone.

Same here. I've never heard of that before. Even middling programs have had training tables going back decades. My gosh, as a regular college student I got more than one meal a day at the regular cafeteria.

Pete Carroll was on 103.3 yesterday because he's in town for a clinic at TCU, and he said Smith was a great athlete who always had trouble gaining and holding weight. How did he neglect to mention that it was USC's fault because the poor kid had to exist on Filet O' Fishes?

He also said Smith could play LT with some more seasoning, but could play RT in the NFL right now. Said he didn't play LT because they had Charles Brown.

What is the disconnect here? Smith didn't live on campus and obviously didn't have easy access to get to campus for the meals. In fact, I believe in an interview I just heard two or three days ago, Smith said he didn't have a car in college.

Beyond that, we're talking about a 280+ lb athlete who likely needs 4,000-5000 calories a day. But I'm sure the meal plan at your college was practically an all-you-can-eat buffett, right?

You're also making an argument from silence regarding what Pete Carroll didn't say, or closer to the truth, what you think he should have said.

It's like deducing from the Bible that Peter never went to the restroom. Why? Well, because "why didn't the Bible just say that he did then?"

Just for fun, 8 more reasons the Cowboys might not draft Tyron Smith:
.
1. Jerry might show up to the draft drunk, trade all picks to Carolina for the #1 and draft Cam Newton.
2. Leonard Davis might call Jerry and tell him that he is down to 315 lbs and wants to play Right Tackle.
3. Jerry might pay scientists to create a youth serum and use it to bring Erik Williams back to his 1993 form.
4. Somebody from CowboysZone might put Jerry in a headlock and force him to trade all picks for #1 and draft Patrick Peterson.
5. Smith might declare that he is quitting football to become a roofer.
6. The NFL might announce that in order to prevent injuries, they are going to become a Flag Football league.
7. Smith might be hit by an Asteroid.
8. California might fall into the ocean.

A. He wouldnt be locked into either tackle position.

2. He is at or around the average tackle weight in the NFL. He has shown how he moves at that weight to Garrett in person.

D. I dont think anyone is saying he is a finished product. But there seems to be a lot of nit-picking w/ Tyron. First it was "Hes too light, he will never put on weight". Then he puts on the weight in a few weeks(who knew a teenager running non-stop, and eating Ramen noodles would be a little thin) and people say "Well he just put on a bunch of weight, this could throw him all off"

Im fairly sure if he came here, he'd at least start at RT. That really wasn't the point though.

I agree that he's an extremely talented athlete, just that for an OT to go top ten, they don't usually have issues like they just put on 30 pounds and have never played at that weight before in their life.. or the fact that he's a little inexperienced at the LT position, even if he says he is more comfortable on that side.

I think he'll definately be there if we want him at 9. Just think its a little much to talk about him going top 5, that's all.

The "truth" is that no Division 1 scholarship athlete is limited to 1 meal a day in their packaged meal plans. If he was only eating 1 meal a day then that was by his choice. Maybe he's not a big eater or maybe he was too lazy to walk to the cafeteria between classes, IDK.

I'm not trying to knock the guy, maybe the quote was taken out of context and he's talking about how he tried to get extra meals in, IDK. But there's no sense in arguing that he was limited to 1 meal a day on his food plan because that would never happen, ever.

Yeah, I don't know of a single academic meal plan that limits you to on meal a day.

From Eatman's article..........

But Smith has done his part to make sure positive things will happen to his future. Coupled with his age, and playing just two years at USC, Smith said gaining about 30 pounds in the last few months should only help his cause.

Smith added that he's gained "good weight" in this process, thanks in large part to simply changing his eating habits and gaining some direction while working out this spring at Athletes Performance training center in Phoenix.

"I could never gain weight at USC," Smith explained. "I stayed off campus and barely had enough money to pay for my place. I had a meal plan to eat once a day. I only had a couple of bucks in my pocket, so I'd eat at like Jack-in-the Box or McDonalds. I was only eating once or twice a day. It was hard to keep that weight on, since I was working out all the time and always running.

"Once I did go to API in Arizona, they got me on a nutrition system and I was eating three meals a day and a shake after my workout. I was just having the proper calories each day and I think everything is just working out for the best. The weight I have now feels more natural. I can still move around quickly as I was at 285. I'm at 310, I'll play there or 315. The weight I'm at right now, teams feel like is perfect. Right now, I'm just trying to maintain it."

Lol, the naysayers refuse to acknowledge what is plainly explained by Smith himself.

Instead, they'll continue to run with the blanket "there's no college meal plan like that..." angle.

Which leads to the obvious question. Are they insinuating Smith is lying?

I listened to Eatman on the Lunch Break podcast discuss his "interview" with Smith earlier today. He gave no indication that he disbelieved Smith's explanation.

Meal Plan-Gate, I love it!

I believe I have unraveled the mystery!

Exhibit A: He lived off campus!

First of all, why? You're at practice all the time and on full scholarship, wouldn't it be easier to take advantage of that and stay on campus?

Secondly, according to the USC Meal Plans (http://hospitality.usc.edu/forms/meal_plans.pdf), if you're an incoming freshman you have to take part in what they call the Cardinal Meal Plan which is unlimited meals.

Exhibit B: Community Apartment Meal Plan
If you live in the USC Apartments (which is what he may have meant by living "Off Campus") the CAMP provides the following:

This plan provides 50 meals and 100 dining dollars per semester. The
50 meals may be used in both EVK and Parkside Restaurant throughout
the semester. The $100 Dining Dollars may be used in USC Hospitality,
University Park Campus, Retail and Residential Dining Venues.
$575 per semester.

Now, perhaps by living off campus he chose to forfeit his unlimited meal plan or it wasn't available to him, that would have given him access to the cheap CAMP plan that completely sucks because it provides 50 meals and 100 bucks PER SEMESTER. That's not even enough for 1 free meal a day.

Exhibit C: The 2nd Big Mac on the Grassy Knoll

Why not eat another Big Mac?! They've got like 1000 calories a piece!

A few weeks ago, most here would have been VERY happy if Smith took one of the slots before 9.

I like him, but if it allows a great player to fall to us, then fine with me.
If one of the QBs is still around after pick 5, then many feel someone will trade up with Cleveland to get the QB.

So say Dareus, Miller, 2 QBs, Smith, Fairly, Green, Quinn all go before us....that gets us Peterson :)

just dreamin.

This post had me thinking about the top 10. You can build picks 7-10 easy, and I think Carolina will take Cam Newton. It's picks 2-6 which are tricky, imo.

I tiered the best players in this draft into these categories:

Tier 1:

Marcell Dareus
A.J. Green
Von Miller
Patrick Peterson

Tier 2:

Nick Fairley
Julio Jones
Robert Quinn
Tyron Smith

Tier 3:

Blaine Gabbert
Cam Newton

Gosselin stated that there were 12 blue chip players. I think these 10 players and Amukamara and Bowers are the 12 players.

You can build picks 7-10 easy with all the tier two players:

10. Washingon- Jones

9. Dallas- Smith

8. Tenn- Fairley

7. S.F.- Quinn

These four players fit perfectly in these slots.

Now, 2-6 isn't as easy. The two QBs come into play.

I think Denver will want to trade down, and Arizona could want to move up for Von Miller. I'm not buying the Miller to Denver hype because putting him at 43 SOLB isn't maximizing his pass rush ability. Denver will choose between Peterson and Dareus, imo. If they stay put, I think they take Peterson. If they move down, Peterson is likely gone, and they take Dareus.

Buffalo will choose between Miller and Peterson and Dareus, imo.

The Bengals will choose between Peterson, Gabbert, and A.J. Green, imo.

Arizona will choose between Peterson, Green, Quinn, or Gabbert. I think Miller is going in the top 3. If they want him, they will most likely have to jump the Bills. Arizona could see Peterson, Miller, and Gabbert come off the board in a row. If that happens, A.J. Green should be the pick if they stay put.

Cleveland will choose between Dareus, Fairley, Quinn, Green, and Smith.

They should take Gabbert...he is better.

And I think the biggest lock in the draft is Denver and Dareus.

Easy, hoss. I wasn't deducing anything from what Carroll said... I was just being facetious. It's pure coincidence that I happened to hear Pete Carroll talking about Smith yesterday, so I threw that in.

To answer your question, yes, my "regular student" meal plan was practically all you could eat. It was open most of the time, only closing in the mid afternoon for a few hours, and there wasn't a limit on how much you could eat.

I think Count probably figured out what the deal was -- staying on campus wasn't cool, so Smith got an apartment off campus and couldn't afford or, much more likely, just didn't make the effort to get back just to eat. Fine, but I find even that odd as the average American proves you can get plenty of calories (and even protein) on the dollar menu if you want to.

I'm not implying anything sinister about the kid. It's probably as simple as the fact that he was good enough in college at his present weight that he didn't feel the need to bulk up, and thus didn't put the effort into it. But I still don't buy that a starter at one of the biggest football factories in America couldn't afford to eat enough. That just doesn't make sense.

I don't know who will be better, but it just takes one team to think Newton. Gabbert may be a little safer, but if Newton hits, he is going to hit big, I think. I'm reading where the Panthers are sold on Newton, but the owner isn't sold. I've also read that A.J. Green is the guy after Newton. I see the owner caving. He is going to be isolated.

I read where Elway and some other high ranking official wants Dareus, but Fox wants Peterson (as BPA). I've also read where Dareus' stock is cooling a little. We can only conjecture, but Elway is big on Mike Shanahan, and Shanahan traded for Bailey. I've heard Denver wants to move down, too. I can see Fox convincing Elway to draft Peterson over Dareus.

1. Carolina- Newton QB Auburn

2. Denver- Peterson CB LSU

3. Buffalo- Miller OLB Texas A&M

4. Cinncin- Gabbert QB Missouri

5. Arizona- Green WR Georgia

6. Cleve- Dareus DT Alabama

7. S.F.- Quinn DE North Carolina

8. Tenn- Fairley DT Auburn

9. Dallas- Smith OT USC

10. Wash- Jones WR Alabama

or

1. Carolina- Newton

2. Arizona- Miller

3. Buffalo- Peterson

4. Cinncin- Gabbert

5. Denver- Dareus

6. Clevel- Green

7. S.F. - Quinn

8. Tenn- Fairley

9. Dallas- Smith

10. Wash- Jones

or

1. Newton

2. Dareus

3. Miller

4. Gabbert

5. Peterson

6. Green

7. Quinn

8. Fairley

9. Smith

10. Jones

Would the Cardinals draft Quinn or Green or neither? I'd draft Green.

1. Newton
2. Dareus
3. Miller
4. Gabbert
5. Peterson
6. Quinn
7. Green
8. Fairley
9. Smith

Would the 49ers look to move down instead of drafting Green? They do need a WR opposite of Crabtree. Would they draft Amukamara over Green? I wouldn't, but I don't know about them. I have read where 7 personnel directors have stated that Green is the best player in the draft. It's hard to see him falling to 7. Cleveland could draft Green and make it mute, but I'm not sure Quinn wouldn't be the pick.

1. Newton
2. Peterson
3. Miller
4. Gabbert
5. Green
6. Dareus
7. Quinn
8. Fairley
9. Smith
10. Jones

I could see the bold being the real draft.

How much does Arizona and S.F. value A.J. Green?

That is the question. Green should go in the 4-7 range. I think the Bengals are going to be forced into drafting a QB. However, they could opt for Peterson or Green. Buffalo could take a QB. Would Buffalo take Green? It's Buffalo, afterall?

The top 6 is just not settled.

I'm assuming the old days with Athletic dorms and donors bringing in truck loads of beef are over? Or was that only here in Oklahoma?

1 Carolina - Dareous
2 Denver - Petersen
3 Buffalo – Gabbert
4 Bengals – Green
5 Cardinals – Quinn
6 Browns – J Jones
7 49ers – Prince
8 Tenn – Fairly
9 Dallas Smith
10 Skins – Newton

I'm with you Uno. If I am Carolina I try and trade out of the #1 pick or take Dareus. I saw an interview with Rivera a few days back where he had the chance to distance himself from Jimmy Clausen and throw him under the bus. He didn't.
