Happy May Day everyone. I started wondering how May Day ever translated to the SOS call "mayday".

Here's the answer according to Wikipedia:
Mayday is an emergency code word used internationally as a distress signal in voice procedure radio communications. It derives from the French venez m'aider, meaning 'come help me'.[1]
