A closer look at RB Phil Mafah and what he can and can't be

I’d like to see him push Luepke.

Hunter gets a pass because his position is “FB” instead of “RB”, but other than catching out of the backfield, I see Mafa giving us better short yardage capability.
Why? Hunter is quicker to the hole.

Nope. He has not proven to be serviceable, not in the least. At worst he's a camp cut. At best he might be a decent blocker.

Why you so high on him? Most 7th rounders don't make the team.
Tell Clemson that

My Lord, let's give him some love. The guy has a chance to start in Dallas. At worst, he will impact the RB 2 spot . Someone is getting cut and it won't be him. He's playing.
Actually, I'd say the opposite. Hold up on the lovefest until he at least looks decent in preseason.

Why are you high on him?

Again, because of his tape. The eye test. He's a bigger RB that has enough top end speed to get it done. He's not sexy at all, but just gets positive yards and is good in pass pro. It's not a lovefest, the guy isn't a bellcow. Not elite. But he's good enough to carve out a role. He should make the team and help us. Hey, if he gets cut ,so what? He's a 7th rd pick. No fuss no muss.

Mafah is a PS guy if he is lucky. He better be able to make ST tackles just to make the PS. If he is playing games in the NFL at RB, Dallas is in trouble.

I think you are mistaking serviceable in college for serviceable in the pros. Entirely different matter.
Not exactly true. Depends on factors like scheme you run and the talent around you. He will be surrounded by better talent . He played top competition at times and did fine. It wasn't always Clemson playing Appalachian State lol. Not sure why the negativity towards a lowly 7th round pick. Weird.

He reminds me of Troy Hambrick.

Gawd ...lol. Troy btw played on a crappy team. He was terrible in pass pro . But I can see the similarities between he and Mafah. I think Phil has more power though, and slightly better pass catching ability.

The current version of the Cowboys' OL is one that should render Phil Mafah's performance quite serviceable. He'll be tested in TC and the preseason games to determine if his performance proves adequate or not. Until then, the speculation doesn't favor an accurate depiction of what to expect from this soon-to-be-tested rookie RB. Once the pads come on and his abilities are on display, nothing concrete is likely to be proven. The performance of the Cowboys' OL will surely influence his worth.

Is it really negativity if I've done research on him and don't think he'll make it? I've looked at the data and tapes and read the scouting reports. He's slow to the hole and can't cut. So, I conclude he prolly won't be good enough. Am I not allowed an opinion? Do you think Matt Farniok was good? Why the negativity?

The tape that shows he needs a runway to get going?
So. He doesn't need to be Superman every play. There's a role for him here if he can prove himself. Soon as we stash him on the PS he will get poached. That's why he won't go to the PS. They won't let that happen.

Why the "Gawd"? Who do you compare him to? What's wrong w/ comparing a player to one w/ a similar skillset?

This is true. Let the cake bake.

With above average OL play Mafah can be productive. Same for Blue. We have a lot riding on our 3 first round OL this year.

That has to work out for any of these RBs to have success.

Out of curiosity, what was Dowdle's pre-draft score? What about Blue?
Regarding NFL.com’s pre-draft score for Jaydon Blue, they have him 61.1 which is considered a “good backup with future potential to start.”

Here’s the link to NFL.com’s profile on Blue: https://www.nfl.com/prospects/jaydon-blue/3200424c-5532-6186-a82d-38322b898c1f
