I want your opinion on something. I play a computer football game, in an online league, called Strat-O-Matic Football. Next year I should have an opportunity to draft either Tashard Choice or Felix Jones in the 1st round. It is a keeper league, so whomever I take I can keep for as long as they play or until I cut them or trade them.

Given the long term choice of either Choice at RB or Jones, which would you take? I will be too far down in the draft to take Chris Johnson or some of the others, so I will probably take one of the two Cowboys rookies.

Your thoughts?

If Felix is projected to play the opening season game I'd say Felix but my gut says, Choice Choice Choice....

It is a computer football league (we are now in our 7th season) using the Strat-O-Matic Football computer software. The game uses the past season's statistics and it is a play calling simulation instead of a Madden like arcade game. But you don't just call plays, you also try to dictate matchups by the plays you call. You can choose which LB's to blitz, where to position your Free Safety, that kind of thing. OLmen are rated for run blocking and pass blocking, Dlmen are rated for run stopping and pass rush. DB's are rated for their coverage ability and the skill players have "cards" that reflect their abilities based on the past season.

My current starting RB is Edge James, but he is about at the end of his career and I need to rebuild. My team is the defending champion but I am currently 4-6-1 and unless I have a San Diego Charger's kind of run, I'm cooked for this season. So, I'm looking RB's and WR's in next year's draft, but I'll probably be somewhere around the .500 mark at the end of the year and in the middle of the draft (we have 24 teams), so I'm thinking I might be able to get Jones or Choice.

As an LSU fan who has had the benefit of watching him torch my team and seeing him carry that big play potential forward to the pro level, I have to say Felix Jones. No disrespect to Tashard Choice, but yes, Felix Jones. Final answer.

You guys don't have any concerns about his durability long term?

That's a legitimate concern. Felix had an issue or two while at Arkansas with the injury bug, but I believe that he will not become injury prone as a pro--albeit his rookie season could suggest otherwise.

I know. Just saying that deserves a slap or two.:

I can't believe I'd already forgotten how explosive Felix is.

Next year's offense better be RUN, RUN, RUN, RUN, RUN, PASS, RUN, RUN ...

Barber, Jones, and Choice will be dangerous!

man, just reminds me how horrible Colombo is blocking in the 2nd level, he's either missing his guy or is stepping in the way of the back

that Felix sure has a bright future and damn, TO is still fast, Garrett kills me

I am not so down on Columbo as you are, you can always single out a play or two with the offense linemen, we cannot afford all pro's at every position and overall I was please with his play this season for one of the non probowlers. I understand we could do much better. I agree it is hard not to smile when you see some of those Felix highlights and wonder what if.

With Tecmo coming back in 09, its going to be pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass..........................

Take Felix, he is going to catch alot of balls next year, whereas Choice is either going to be riding the pine or staying in the backfield to block.

Tecmo football baby!!!!!!!

No, it is play by play coaching and each game takes between 1 and 1/2 hours.

You get all of the players from the past season on their original teams. If someone wanted they could play the game solo against some outstanding computer managers that the game comes with. Those computer managers are actually set up to mimic the real life play calling tendencies of each team, both on offense and defense.

It is more fun to play the game online head to head, and there are a lot of leagues out there like ours where you begin the league with an initial draft. (Our league has 53 man rosters and 3 man IR) You then have to cut your team down by as many players as you want to draft in the next season's draft.

In terms of the playcalling, it is fairly basic, but because of the matchups it is pretty challenging.

For example, on a running play, I would select run, select the ball carrier, (QB, FB, HB, or a WR on a reverse), and then I would select the hole that I wanted him to run it into. If I select an end run then it is either to the strong side or weak side, if it is an off tackle, then right or left, and a dive play is over the center. This becomes important when the game calls for a comparison between your blocker's rating and the computer "dice roll", or the defensive player's rating and the computer's dice roll. That is why you want to run toward your strongest blockers and the defenses weakest run stoppers. What complicates it, however, is that the defense can choose to blitz linebackers into those gaps, and can even "key" the running back if he chooses the right gap. Stuff like that.

It is a lot of fun.
