Going for Best Player available is a little too simple for what Dallas needs. Here's some thoughts on the draft.
First, the draft strength must be analyzed overall. Is it a weak draft, and if so, where does the talent drop off considerably? If it drops off after pick 12, there's no way Dallas should consider trading down. Otherwise, if the talent is evenly matched from picks 11 down to pick 50, Dallas should trade down, and get more picks out of that group.
Also, after a point, the sure-fire/highly likely to succeed players who can start are gone, somewhere around the late second, early third round, right? At this time, Dallas should pick the best athlete available, who has an outside shot to be a starter, and definitely could fill in as a backup. Robert McCune out of Louisville would be a great example of raw talent and excellent measurables. I know Dallas doesn't have a third rounder, but in a trade down, they could acquire one.
Then, past the fourth round, you start getting into the long, long shots to make the team, and at this point, you should go with the playmakers at the small school levels. Take a chance on em.
Finally, looking at Dallas' needs, there's no need so critical that you must draft in the first round to fill it. I would say QB is close to that, but that would be starting a whole new mess with Henson already here. DT is a big area of need, but I think the guys rated lower like Ngata are a better fit with Glover than the faster guys ranked higher. Safety is a similar situation. The guys who cover well, and would complement Roy Williams are again, second and third rounders. WR has to be addressed at some point, too, as the aging WR's this season showed us. We are in a jam there. Free agency can fill some needs, but the draft should be looked at as the way to give this team an infusion of youth and talent, with TEACHABLE players.
