A Draft Visit Theory

Clearly Dallas has chosen heavily in the past players who have taken private visits to Valley Ranch. We tend to place those players on the Cowboys radar as we think about their likely choices. But I wonder if coaching at the Senior Bowl changed that practice this time.

Skimming the Senior Bowl rosters -- especially the North team's roster -- it seems that Dallas invited few players, other than QBs, for private visits. It seems unlikely Dallas coached the team and dismissed all/most of the players as potential picks. It seems more likely the coaches/execs felt they had a chance to get to know the players and chose to use private visits to better explore non-Senior Bowl participants.

I certainly didn't take an exhaustive look at this, and someone might be able to quickly shred the theory. But it looks pretty cut and dried. Either the Cowboys didn't fall deeply in love with most of the players they coached or they felt private visits would be better spent on players with whom they hadn't had as much interaction.

QBs are an obvious exception, but one would expect any team to want as much time as possible with anyone it might pick to play the position

I think that the Cowboys, by and large, did an outstanding job throughout the process of visiting with enough players that their intentions with whom they were targeting was very well cloaked. Right now, I can see them going four ways - Ramsey, Bosa, Elliott or a trade down.

Beyond the first round, though, and deep into what is perceived to be later-round value, Senior Bowl players appear largely absent from the visit list. Again, my thought is that Dallas figured the private visits would be better spent on players in which it has an interest but didn't have the Senior Bowl opportunity to get to know. Of course, I have often been known to be wrong. Just trying to figure out whether the visitor list is quite as predictive this year as in the past.
