Just spit-balling here, based on a few things we have heard this offseason.
Jerry says he wants a pass rusher, even if they keep Spencer. That's his focus. He also mentioned something about getting the "best one in the draft." We all know that's not possible, but what if he didn't mean this years draft?
He also said something about Spencer getting more pressure if we could "set the edge" in another way.
Garrett has said that Spencer is a good football player in many facets of the game. Talk has been he is good in coverage and run as well as the occasional rush.
We heard reports that the Cowboys defense is played against as basically a 4-3. Everybody knows Ware is coming, so right after the snap our D looks like a 4-3 anyway.
Garrett also said we believe in going after the BPA in the draft and using free agency to fill holes.
So, add it all up, what do we get?
We need someone who can set the edge and add to the rush. This makes for a more dynamic pass rush and makes Spencer more valuable in that department. We have three rushing threats on the outside instead of two.
Who can do that for us?
Answer: Mario Williams -- the best rusher in the 2006 draft.
The only twist is that this requires going to the 4-3. And guess what? Garrett also said that is a possibility. As a long as we have Ware, its basically a 4-3 anyway
And today, talking about Spencer, he said he is a part of what our "defense is going to become."
Yeah, it's going to become a 4-3, with Williams setting the strong side edge and Spencer playing the Kiawanuka role as SOLB.
Spencer rushes on 3rd down from a joker position. He plays the run and pass well (like he already does) on 1st and 2nd.
Our starting 3 LBs are Spencer, Lee, Carter. We have a stout d-line of Williams, Ratliff, Lissemore, Ware (plus Butler, Hatcher, Spears, Geathers as backups -- probably need to draft a DE sometime later, although there is still Albright too, who played that in college). So we are stacked there.
Brooking and Lemon as backup LBs... we need another two probably, but only backups.
Sign Carr, resign Elam. What does that leave us? No holes to fill on defense.
Sign a center in FA. Let Arkin, Nagy, Holland, Kosier, Killer, Costa, draft picks battle it out for backups and starters at Guard. Resign Robinson (or not if he gets too big a deal). No holes on offense.
Freedom to go BPA.
Decastro is that -- the BPA in the first.
BAM! Best offseason plan yet. Please be true Jerry and Jason!
PS: Someone is gonna say "salary cap," but honestly we have the money because we can structure deals to pay next year instead of this. Next year we have a rising cap, 28 mil in dead money gone, Spencer likely gone or signed to a manageable deal. See the BTB article about being able to afford 2 premiere free agents. Robinson and the Center (the one from Oakland, or a stop gap like Saturday) are cheap-mid contracts. No breaking the bank there.
