Dwight Lowery is another candidate with strong ties to Henderson. The Jets drafted Lowery in the the 4th round of the '08 draft and quickly earned a place as the Jets nickel back. Henderson worked with Lowery that season and helped the rookie get extensive playing time. Lowery was off-the charts good in '09 for new secondary coach Dennis Thurman. Here are Scientific Football's final '09 cornerback numbers:
1. Darrelle Revis, 102 att., 64 scs. plays, 372 net yds., 3.6 YPA, 62.7 scs. %
2. Dwight Lowery, 45 att., 27 scs. plays, 181 net yds., 3.9 YPA, 58.7 scs. %
3. Charles Woodson, 65 att., 39 scs. pls., 281 yds., 4.3 YPA, 60.0 scs. %
Lowery dropped down the Jets pecking order after they traded for Antonio Cromartie and drafted Kyle Wilson 1st in 2010. He was moved to safety in '10 when injuries hit the safety corps. and was traded to Jacksonville last year, where he worked both inside and outside. Lowery got extensive time as the Jags free safety and got solid reviews. When I talked safeties with K.C. Joyner last month, he described Lowery as the glue for a mediocre Jaguars unit.
Corner to safety transitions often fizzle, but Lowery appears to have made his. He's only 26 and could benefit from a reunion with Henderson. He's not the biggest guy, at 198 lbs. but he fits the coverage safety profile which has emerged in recent years. His Jets work shows that he would offer quality depth at cornerback, if needed. Neither Alan Ball nor Frank Walker ever played at Lowery's '09 level. It's been years since Terence Newman did. Jacksonville has gobs to cap space, but last week negotiations between Lowery and the team were described as "far apart." He's sure to be available on Tuesday.
Lowery could be a low-risk, high-reward buy. He doesn't have Nelson's up-and-down career spikes. He doesn't have Laron Landry's health questions. He's the youngest candidate in the pool and can get a direct reference from the Cowboys' position coach.
There are no perfect safety candidates for the Cowboys in free agency. They could do worse, however, than Pool or Lowery. In fact, they have the last few years.
