Dwight Lowery is another candidate with strong ties to Henderson. The Jets drafted Lowery in the the 4th round of the '08 draft and quickly earned a place as the Jets nickel back. Henderson worked with Lowery that season and helped the rookie get extensive playing time. Lowery was off-the charts good in '09 for new secondary coach Dennis Thurman. Here are Scientific Football's final '09 cornerback numbers:

1. Darrelle Revis, 102 att., 64 scs. plays, 372 net yds., 3.6 YPA, 62.7 scs. %
2. Dwight Lowery, 45 att., 27 scs. plays, 181 net yds., 3.9 YPA, 58.7 scs. %
3. Charles Woodson, 65 att., 39 scs. pls., 281 yds., 4.3 YPA, 60.0 scs. %

Lowery dropped down the Jets pecking order after they traded for Antonio Cromartie and drafted Kyle Wilson 1st in 2010. He was moved to safety in '10 when injuries hit the safety corps. and was traded to Jacksonville last year, where he worked both inside and outside. Lowery got extensive time as the Jags free safety and got solid reviews. When I talked safeties with K.C. Joyner last month, he described Lowery as the glue for a mediocre Jaguars unit.

Corner to safety transitions often fizzle, but Lowery appears to have made his. He's only 26 and could benefit from a reunion with Henderson. He's not the biggest guy, at 198 lbs. but he fits the coverage safety profile which has emerged in recent years. His Jets work shows that he would offer quality depth at cornerback, if needed. Neither Alan Ball nor Frank Walker ever played at Lowery's '09 level. It's been years since Terence Newman did. Jacksonville has gobs to cap space, but last week negotiations between Lowery and the team were described as "far apart." He's sure to be available on Tuesday.

Lowery could be a low-risk, high-reward buy. He doesn't have Nelson's up-and-down career spikes. He doesn't have Laron Landry's health questions. He's the youngest candidate in the pool and can get a direct reference from the Cowboys' position coach.

There are no perfect safety candidates for the Cowboys in free agency. They could do worse, however, than Pool or Lowery. In fact, they have the last few years.

Lowery would be my target but I doubt the Cowboys are going to make a move for a safety in free agency. I think they are targeting center and CB; Mario Williams might be on their radar but I don't think they can sign him.

yep, he already signed with the angels. teammate of ozzie & harriet

Love Lowery was in my top 5 in the free agent wish list thread a little while back. The fact that he could play cb and safety is huge.

Probably one of the most underrated and least talked about positions in general. When both your safeties together have 3 passes defended put together (all by Sensy), they really were pretty terrible.

We just have to replace Elam, whether its in free agency or the draft. Since both markets are paper thin, and we haven't addressed the situation with good picks for years, we have painted ourself in this corner.

If we sign Carr, safety becomes wayyyy more important than a 4th corner. Bout time we recognize how awful they were, especially Elam, and correct the problem. We can get Mario, but if we are horrible on the back end, we can't expect the improvement we all want.

I know the Jags wanted to re-sign him badly, but are not willing to overpay.

So that means that either:
1. He wants a lot of money, Eric Weddle money +
2. Or, he wants out of Jax, so he is asking a crazy amount of money so they can't/won't re-sign him.

I would like to go after him, since I don't care for the safety class in this draft.
He is more of a Free Safety, ballhawk.

I think this is one of those below-the-radar signings that makes a lot of sense at the right price.

Agreed, seems like a great fit

Jim Leonard is the safety we should go after that nobody is talking about

No thanks. Lacks top end speed. See the Jets/Giants game where Cruz took it 90+ yards to the house.

Good luck finding a perfect player..

JL is everything we need back there..steady, reliable, leader, and he won't break the bank

I am not saying the guy needs to be perfect but speed and ball skills come in pretty handy at Safety.....from what I hear.

JL would be better than Elam though no doubt
