dumb question from an old-timer, ... what is 'tag' and how would I use it, and what would I use it for?

I see that you are putting @ in front of user name, then what and why?

try not to be too sarcastic with your answers

If I use the @ symbol and put it in front of your name like so @WV Cowboy it is called tagging someone.

By doing so you should get an alert (if you have normal settings on) saying someone has tagged you and a link to that post. Similar to an alert you would get when someone quotes one of your posts.

Kind of a mix between twitter and facebook.

But basically it just lets you know that someone made a post and had you in mind for at least part of it.

You can also follow specific users and get alerts when they make a new post/thread.

You can also follow separate zones here... Like if you want to it can be setup so any time someone makes a new thread in the Draft zone it will send you an alert.

Hope that explains it.

@WV Cowboy will let Xenforo (the forum software) know to send an alert and a link to the post for whatever user name follows the @ tag. So, if you post something you really want me to see, for example, about how awesome you secretly think I am, you'd just use @Idgit, and, when I logged in next, that post would show up as an alerted post for me to come visit and say I agreed with you, wholeheartedly.

WV, you must be doing something wrong, because I"m not getting the alert for the post about how awesome you think I am yet. Did you send it?

Regarding the dislike feature, one would wonder if it'd play a part in dismissing some of the harsh feelings. Instead of writing a mean spirited post to somebody, you could just dislike it, and you could play it safe, and do a 5+ dislike post is hidden as to not get bombarded with dislikes. @Reality thoughts?

That's not going to happen :) Think about it .. the haters would pile on the homers' posts and get them removed and the homers would pile on the haters' posts and get them removed. It would be a forum with only "Where did my post go?" threads :D

In all seriousness though, a dislike or down vote system promotes an attacking and confrontational system between users. In any case, if there are users you don't care for, you can ignore them and never see their posts.

I think it works both ways, certain users congregate in monotonous threads and secretly like each others non-informative posts.
