A few concerns with Carter and Melton

Starting to feel a little bit concerned about Melton. The guy hasn't played a game since September of last year, and he has been dinged up. Considering that he was already coming off a major injury, it does concern me that we haven't seen him yet. Is he expected to play Saturday? We are heavily relying on this guy, as he seems to be the only passrusher we have.

As far as Carter goes, it looks like Wilber will be the Sam, McClain at the Mike, and Durant at the Will. I thought this scheme was supposed to simply things and make it easier to play your assignment. What gives? Will he be the backup Will or what?

Haven't you heard the news? The Dallas Cowboys defense has only two types of players, you either suck, or play great but stay hurt and unable to play.

Sometimes there's a third option, where you are mediocre and hurt, and somehow keep your spot on the roster.

Garrett, even though says day-to-day, thinks Melton & McClain should be able to do some practice later this week. does that mean full practice or not, who really knows but the coaching staff.
But for some reason I doubt either will play against Miami. If so, maybe one series. But then the last game against Denver when no top line players play, will they be held out of that game.

So we may not know until game 1 anyway.

Regarding Melton I think there's truth to him obviously not being the 2012 Melton right now. How can he be?

But I do think a lot of him not playing right now is primarily being pre-cautious and secondarily giving younger guys playing time and our staff experimenting.

Regarding Carter, they are literally trying to see what they can get out of him in this scheme and they are not impressed. Clearly insecure about his reliability during plays.

I guess I haven't been keeping up with Carter. What happened to all the reports about him impressing that started earlier in training camp?

Do we really have to answer this question? Lol

I think with Melton is simply precautionary. From what I hear, if we were in December, he would be playing.

I can't say I disagree with it either. He knows the system. He has shown what he can do. Let him take it easy in camp and have his legs completely under him when the season starts.

Carter is either just dumb, or only care about collecting a paycheck. I can't remember the last Cowboys with that much raw physical ability who looked like he cared so little on the field. He isn't even chasing down plays now. That was what he hung his hat on his rookie season. He made a living running guys down.

Starting to become really disappointed in Carter here. Was hoping he would've put together a good camp to show he's adapted to the scheme and improved. Sounds like he'll be doing a combination of sitting on the bench and playing in certain packages/downs only.

Weak.

I've been concerned with meltons health. I just dont see him ready to play week 1. Carter has no heart and drive for the sport is what it seems.

It's insane what's going on on our DL here in camp still. It feels like we're no closer to sliding a lineup than we were when camp started. Melton is questionable, McClain has been out the whole time, Spencer will be back from significant surgery the week the games count. Lawrence: gone. Okoye--are you kidding me? And then we've got the rookies/street free agents who have quick steps and can't use their hands. I literally have zero idea what we're going to get when the games count. And it's not that everybody's necessarily awful...we just don't know what we've got with a lot of them.

As for the LBs, Carter specifically, I have no idea what's going on there. He was supposed to be the good athlete we could use to get pressure from the WIL after we lost our primary rush end threat in Lawrence. Haven't seen that in the games (no surprise there), but to hear people talk about it in camp, he's in danger of losing his spot to Durant. Now, losing Holloman really hurts the LB depth, too. Kinda stinks.

There is a reason why Melton's contract is done the way it is.

Gotta prove he still has it.

As for Carter, no clue why he went from a rookie with probowl potential to a guy who looks lost/don't care(some games last year).
IF he gets beat out by Durant, then he will probably looking for another team next year.

Bruce Carter has never had the heart or desire to be a consistently good LB. This shouldn't come as any sort of surprise.

I do believe Carter cares. I think he has a major confidence problem which seems manifested in his inability to process or understand his defensive responsibilities. I feel for the guy.

It's crazy to think that while a little optimistic, there was a point in time not too long ago when the combo of Lee & Carter were touted as the next Willis/Bowman. Now it seems like there's a chance neither will headline our LB corps anymore

I've about given up on Carter. And from what some of the writers say, so have the coaches.

As far as Melton goes, I get the feeling he's taking the veteran approach to training camp -- skipping as much as possible.

But it does worry me for him and Claiborne and Carr that they've played so little this preseason. Carr and Melton are good solid vets, but they do need some work. Training camp isn't totally useless, or no one would do it.

And of course Claiborne hasn't even earned any veteran leeway yet. He needs to be out there trying to prove he isn't possibly the biggest bust in franchise history.

Carter has a problem in coverage and his instincts aren't the best. He also can get caught up in traffic. He may be depth at this point although I'm hesitant to say that. I think Durant goes back to Sam, Carter stays at Will and Ro makes the Mike. Those are non passing downs. I have no idea who plays in SPs.
