Cowboys vs Broncos

This was a hard loss to take guys. If you aren't a Jason Garrett fan than this is your week to let him have it.

Offense

The Broncos did a great job of stopping the run and on passing downs they by far gave us the most confusing coverages we had seen all year.

On the play Romo fumbled the Broncos were rolling 3 DB's that were interchangeable safeties.

Bell went from being a Safety and then came back to be a Nickel Corner on the left side. The ball was snapped, Romo stared right the entire way, he looked for Crayton, then Williams, then Crayton, then decided to throw it to Williams.

By the time he decided to throw to Williams the play had taken to long to develop and the Blitzer hit Tony and he fumbled the ball.

Basically Romo never recoginized the coverage. It was 3rd and long and the only thing he had open was Martellus Bennett who was wide open because of the blitzing Corner. Had he thrown it to Bennett than it wouldn't have been a 1st but it wouldn't have been a turnover either.

The running game struggled the entire day because Dallas had trouble getting to the 2nd level and blocking Denvers speedy LB's.

Flo did an excellent job of doing this last week but he really struggled this week.

Denver also did a lot of things schematically to get pressure on the QB. They had guys coming we didn't account for.

Even when they didn't blitz though Flozell had trouble blocking his man.

Tough day for Flo.

In the 4th Quarter Bennetts holding call really hurt us on the Tashard Choice run. It was a ticky tacky call but there was a hold.

I was proud of the guys on the 4th down play on the last drive. Hurd had tremendous focus on that play and Tony did a fantastic job of getting out of the pocket and making a play.

Hurd also came back again on this drive and got a big first down for us.

So now we're at the end of the game when Romo throws to Hurd twice.

On the first throw to Hurd it seemed like it was pre-meditated and he never looked for anyone else. Had he looked he had Miles Austin breaking free on the backside of this play for a touch. It was a much simpler throw.

On the 2nd throw to Hurd, Miles Austin again beat his man but it would've been a tougher throw because Crayton was in the way.

Romo throws the ball and Champ Bailey makes a fantastic play. It really surprises me that they would go after him twice in a row.

Overall the Offense was terrible and it was the reason we lost the game. Give the Broncos some credit though. They are excellent defensively and well coached.

I felt like there were plays to be made over the middle of the field to counter their blitzing but we just never did anything to capitalize on it.

Defense

On the other hand Wade Phillips did an excellent job of putting our guys in a position to Succeed.

Denvers first Touchdown came off of a Tony Romo fumble after putting Anthony Spencer in a perfet position to make a play and the ball just went through him and into Morenos hands.

On the big 4th & inches stop Spears, and Ratliff had excellent penetration into the backfield. Bobby Carpenter did a great job getting in there too and caused the cutback. After the RB cutback Brookings was there to make the tackle and Jenkins helped clean up.

Give Bobby Carpenter a little love on this play.

It was also sad to see Anthony Spencers first sack be negated by a facemask penalty.

The Ratliff helmet to helmet helped put Denver in Field Goal range to put them @ 10. Really ticky tacky call.

On the Marshall Touchdown at the end of the game Newman had good Coverage but Marshall just went up and made a play. Newman didn't. It's really as simple as that.

If there was 1 giant positive in this game it was Mike Jenkins .

The deep ball he batted down was the best play i've seen a Cowboy DB make since the last deep ball he batted down against Philly in week 2 last year. What a play.

Spears also had a fantastic game for us. Heck of a day for him.

--------------------------

Overall after watching this game I think the Denver defense is for real.

Mike Nolan owned Jason Garrett and confused Romo all day with his disguised coverages.

I felt like the Cowboy Defense had a good game and they were hendered by the Offense in this one.

Marshall will make those plays on anyone.

I was amazed when I saw him on the NFL Network set one night and he was standing with Rod Woodson going through some technique drills.

He made Rod Woodson look small and Woodson was a big corner. It was shocking to see.

I'm not surprised he beat Newman for the ball. He is a physical specimen.

I'm pretty sure that would have been 1/2 sack for both Spencer and Ware.

Pretty easy call. he lead with his helmet and hit the QB in the facemask. I don't like all the new rules protecting the QB, but with the rules the way they are, it was an easy call.

The Ravens/Pats game had 2 calls against the Ravens defense (involving Brady) that were much more questionable (course both calls favored the Pats).

TNew got manhandled at the LOS on that play, but somehow managed to regain his composure and make a pretty good attempt and knocking that ball down.

A poster here actually blamed TNew's effort on the play, but if you watch it, his momentum carried him away from Marshall, yet he still chased after him, only to have a collision with B. James downfield. The player with the best shot at Marshall was actually Hamlin, but he got shook out of his shoes when Marshall made a nasty cut.

So is Roy, only difference is Marshall is a #1 receiver that makes plays and can run more than just posts.

I would add this. Jenkins made some nice plays, but his whole "incomplete pass" call with a receiver on the ground untouched is the sort of idiotic thing that can cost a team a game. He's talented, but he's a bonehead.

While I don't blame the loss on anybody but the Cowboys, Bailey didn't make a great play on the final pass: he committed pass interference.

Newman said on that play Marshall grabbed him at the beginning of the route so he did have to fight just to get back in the position he was in.

If Brandon Marshall sold out to being the best player he could be than he could be unstopable. Dude is a freak.

The Denver offense overall didn't look that great but man their defense is for real.

They were always giving Romo different looks and trying to bait him into throwing to someone who looked open.

I know we have all harped about Garrett not throwing enough slants and this game really proves that point. I think there were plays to be made against some of those blitzes had we had more slants and drags called.

I haven't seen many slants or drags run. Rolling out our mobile QB might help as well.

He is a possesion receiver. There is nothing wrong with that.

He can shield off defenders with the best of them and he can still get up and catch a ball down field when covered if you give him that opportunity. He can make the acrobatic play.

I just think we need to just get the ball in his hands and force DB's to try and tackle him because he is hard to tackle and once he gets his big body going, like TO, he is extremely tough to take down.

I don't like the Romo fumble because they motion choice out of the back field. They gave us confusing looks because thats what they're supposed to do. Empty back field is only good if you're going to get rid of the ball quickly not hold onto and stare down 2 WR. Basically what you said is that Romo held the ball too long didn't go threw his progression and we didn't pick up on their coverage. Honestly who is there DC I hope it isn't some one with 30+ years of coaching EXP i mean our D doesn't confuse people like this. Jason Witten 3 catches 30 yards. This can not happen.

Defense D line is having a wonderful season. I will still be skeptical on Spears because this is a contract year and he OBV wants to get paid. But the D Line has impressed me so far. As for the 4th and 1 how do you not name Brookings the guy who actually made the stop? Yet you single out Carp? Come the hell on carp was sprawled on his back on that play in way way shape or form was he able to make a play in a position to make a play the guy is just trash. Also don't like Jenkins idiots sitting there playing referee after a catch that could of cost us. If you're not going to use your heard while on the field you shouldn't be on the field. Also defense was terrible overall IMO. As usual they can't hold teams when it matters. Spencer misses a gimme INT. Lack of consistent pressure flat at times. Or D played well but it didn't hold up as usual.

That play by Jenkins was dumb but the dude is certainly one if the few players who are progressing instead of the opposite.

Yep. There was nothing ticky-tack about it. It was clearly helmet-to-helmet.

I think that ovrall, our offense isn't getting the ball out quickly enough in the passing game. We stand around and wait for things down field. That's good if they are there but everybody is playing us for this. If we went to 3 step and 5 step drops and just concentrated on getting the ball out, we would beat a lot of these defensive coverages. That's not what they are playing us for. If we did that, we could beat the crap out of a few of these teams. Make them drop there safeties down in the box a bit more and then we could take advantage of some deeper things. We don't have a guy on the roster who can beat coverage with just speed so we have to take what we are given and make the defense adjust to it. We just are not doing that.

Yep, that play was a gem. Note Patrick in the trail position (again).

You could've summed it up by simply saying Romo didn't do his job.
