An ESPN article on barefoot kickers, where have they gone?, had this footnote that I thought you might like to comment on.

Footnotes
1 Regardless what was in vogue, Tom Landry refused to abandon his archaic "4-3 flex," which meant Randy White was always trapped in a four-point stance. Over White's 14-season career, I bet this cost him 25 sacks.

Does this guy think that Randy White was a DE? How did the Manster's 4-point stance cost him 25 sacks?

He's probably thinking that being in a four-point stance makes it more difficult to explode off the snap and rush the passer.

That's what I was thinking also...

Besides that, that flex defense was weird and hard to learn anyway and it was very effective...but, it had to be run exactely as schemed...and who knows (except Landry and the players) what they were supposed to be doing?

I think I read somewhere that it would take a player a good four years to completely understand what they were supposed to do. However, back in those days, players could be kept around for that long if needed...but, I guess not anymore because of free agency and the salary cap?

I am just glad someone had time to complain about the stats of a first ballot Hall of Famer. Along with those lost 25 sacks, how about the gazillion that weren't counted for him from 1975-1981 when the NFL didn't recognize sacks as an official stat? Poor Randy White.

I would also add, another example of what fantasy football has done to our mindset.

Who ever said that the goal of football was to produce personal stats? The goal of football is WINNING.

That "archaic" 4-3 Flex wasn't so archaic during much of Randy White's career.

1975 Super Bowl appearance
1976 Playoff appearance
1977 Super Bowl win
1978 Super Bowl appearance
1979 Playoff appearance
1980 NFC Championship appearance
1981 NFC Championship appearance
1982 NFC Championship appearance
1983 Playoff appearance
1984 missed the playoffs
1985 Playoff appearance
86-88 missed the playoffs

So for most of White's career, in fact, 11 of his 14 years, the defense he played in produced 3 Super Bowl appearances, 6 seasons of NFC Championship games or better, and 10 playoff appearances.

Tell me why Landry would have WANTED to change his defense?

Randy White played his role, played it better than anyone else could have and reaped the benefits of winning.

It used to be that this was PLENTY for an NFL player.

A little off topic since it is about the Set offense but just to give a clue at how complicated Landry was in not only Defense but offense.

Don Merdith once joked about the play book by saying the following.

" I Took a page of Landry's playbook to a Chinese laundry and they gave me three shirts and a pillow case" :laugh2:

I suggest anyone that has not read it, wants to learn some stuff about back in the day and without a doubt laugh out loud...Get Walt Garrisons book Once a Cowboy.

I read that book and it was a laugh a minute with Walt! He is such a good story teller...!

That book is a must read for the younger generation of Cowboy fans (well, the ones that know how to read)!! :D

Have you read Hollywood Henderson's book, "Out of Control"?

He was another one of my favorite players, and his book is a gut wrenching story about his cocain addiction and how it happened, and how he beat it...

I always had respect for him...and shook his hand in person after a Cowboy game, however, I was younger and did not really know what was up with him at that time...but, after reading his book, I gained even MORE respect for that man...it's truely a remarkable story...from his childhood, to getting drafted by the Cowboys, to the downfall of his life...

It's a crazy story...the stuff he did! By the way, he got his name "Hollywood" because that was where he was first introduced to cocain...

Read it! If you have not read it...I'll ship it to you for free!

I admire him soooo much for what he went through!

I will have to order it.

When I ordered walts book I ordered another one at the time but it was out of stock.

I need to order some more books anyways as I am tired of reading the same ones over and over. I think I have read Shogun around 7-10 times already lol.

Well, like I offered...if you want to PM me (or not, it's up to you), I will put it in the mail for you tomorrow...it's just that good of a story. It will amaze you what the man went through...he had fun doing it, I guarantee...but, it caught up to him in the end...

Just an amazing story that I wish every Cowboy fan that has ever heard his name would read...

Tell that to Deacon Jones. He stills says he would be the all time sack leader if they kept track back in his day.

Isn't there anyway to go back and look at the stats, if they kept them that accurate. And see how many tackles he had on the QB.

He's saying Landry should have changed to the 3/4 :D ......and made Manster a LB...which he tried to do by the way. :D

How about if each team pays someone to rewatch all the games and track sacks and anything else they left off back then on the stats?
