A good timeout by McCarthy

Rewatching the Vikings game and on Minnesota's final possession, they were scrambling to get to the line after a receiver was brought down inbounds and we were scrambling to change out defensive personnel, including putting in Joseph for Diggs since he hurt his ankle on the tackle. The substitutions we made took Odighizuwa, Gregory and Parsons all out of the game on third down. After an extra ball being on the field forced the refs to hold up the clock, McCarthy called timeout and got those three players back out there.

Not sure who decided to sub out our best pass rushers in that situation, but it reminded me of so many games under Garrett when we would have our backup linemen in at a crucial moment. Nice of McCarthy to not let that happen in that moment. Sure, it took a ball blunder to give him time to recognize the shortcoming, but at least he did something about it.

Good point. We've killed MM for his clock and game management, but that was definitely a good move. I think we were all scratching our heads when all our best pass rushers came out of the game at a key moment in time. Stuff like that has happened so frequently in the past. So, good for us to give some credit when the guy does something good.

Mike Zimmer called 2 timeouts in a row. A very big No No. Probably costing any chance to win the game. I am sure Vikings fans are fuming about his time management.

I see it every weekend. Every head coach makes mistakes from time to time. It happens.

Yep, throughout the year I have been very critical of MM's clock management but he did come through in this game. Zimmer screwed up with calling two timeouts in a row. The OP is right, calling that timeout got our best players back on the field. So good job McCarthy.

Had to be Quinn doing the subs. Good job MM. He is improving.

I was thinking about this the other day, but never started a thread about it.

I am amazed no one had until now. But if he had not done that, depending on what may have happened. I would bet by house that many would be starting threads about about clock management blunder. Or what they perceive as a blunder.

Props to MM.

Did Zimmer do that or did a player on the field call for the second one? Anyway, you've definitely got to teach your team that they can't do that.

I'd guess the call came from DQ over their radio.

Might have been Durden. Not sure how much responsibility the position coaches are given over substitutions. Whoever it was probably was just thinking that he needed to get some fresh bodies in there. But it was poor situational awareness that McCarthy corrected.

To switch them back out or pull them? Could go either way. It could have been a natural sub situation with Quinn going wait a minute, call timeout and get those guys back in there. However, it went down, I'm just glad to see us recognize that putting in the subs there was a bad idea. Marinelli always seemed to think that having the second-team line in there was just as good as having the first team out there. Never understood it.
