I just heard a great quote on NFL Sound FX. It was from Tom Coughlin, and yes I know he's the Giants head coach, but I felt the quote was fantastic. "A player that makes a team great is better than a great player." So I ask you guys, who on our team is a great player, and who on our team makes our team great? Which ones dominate our roster? I'll start,
Players that make the team great
Tony Romo - People can argue but this team goes as far as Romo carries them. While Romo is a great player, he also elevates this team far above where it should be.
Demarcus Ware - Teams change the way they play us because of this man. There's a reason teams run shorter pass routes and QB's routinely get rid of the ball quicker when they play us, and it's because of him.
Sean Lee - Became a force last season because he set the tone for this defense early and often. Always seems to make impact plays. May not be the greatest athlete on the field but he's probably one of the best football players on the field.
Demarco Murray - Put this team on his back and helped propel us towards the playoffs at mid-season. Unfortunately, injury ended his season prematurely. I have no doubts had he not gotten injured in that first Giants game that we would have closed out that game with a win; but we're just playing what ifs at that point.
Jason Witten - Say what you want about Witten but he's the consummate professional and is seemingly always there to bail us out and make a big play. Consistent and dependable day in and day out what more could you ask?
Tyron Smith - Smith was a force last season making a huge impression during his rookie campaign. He didn't get beat often and as a day 1 rookie starter he instantly made this team better. Unfortunately the same can't be said for the rest of the line.
Jay Ratliff - This is one that I was very conflicted with but felt that ultimately he needed to go on this list. Rat is a fantastic player with a high motor. We have had struggles with the pocket not collapsing and allowing Ware and even Spencer to miss out on would-be sacks because the QB is given room to step up in the pocket. But overall I feel that Rat makes elevates this team with his play.
Players that are great
Dez Bryant - Don't get me wrong I love Dez, but as of right now he's gotta go on this list. I've only seen him take over one game so far in his short career and I'm hoping more follow. But until he can consistently be a threat on every play he has to be relegated to being just a great player.
Miles Austin - Again another player that I'm very conflicted about which list he should be on. Austin is a great athlete and a dangerous wide out, but his injuries and inconsistent hands keep him off the first list. I hope that he really was just not in football shape last year, and that a full offseason helps with some of his injury woes.
Mike Jenkins - Mike's inconsistent play nets him on this list. He showed a lot of heart last season battling through injuries, but he seems like he gets to a certain point and then becomes content. An example was him making the pro bowl. His motivation to play hard tapered off and consequently led to his terrible 2010 season.
Felix Jones - Felix is an electrifying runner. However, he's very hot and cold and can't seem to be able to sustain his hot streaks for very long. It also doesn't help his cause very much with the amount of games he's missed due to injury. It's hard to make your team great when you’re spending a lot of time on the bench.
A pattern I'm seeing from the players on the second list is inconsistencies. I think that's the mark of a player that makes a team great. Someone who the team can depend on no matter what the situation to come through and make a play for his team.
