Well, I just found out that I have an Inguinal hernia that most likely needs to be repaired if I want to have any kind of exercise like sit-ups, push-ups, pull-up, etc.

Has anyone had a hernia and had it repaired by a surgeon?

I will get consultation on May 5th to see what I need to do.

Dang! Sorry to hear that. I haven't had that so I can't respond, but is sounds like it hurts.

It does not really hurt that bad at all, it's just bothersome with a little dull pain. But, I need to get it fixed if I want to continue to exercise.

It's like a sports hernia, in that I "aquired it" by doing sit-ups and other exercises that strained my adominal walls and the wall tore a little to allow my intestine to push through a little. Now I just need to get it operated on.

I had one done in Dec 08.......took a week off work :)

Its a in and out procedure....takes about a month to fully recover....they will use some sort of mesh. The success rate is pretty high too.

The meds may bind you up ....so take some stool softeners..etc...fibre..

did you find that you had a little belly, freak out and go to 100 crunches right off the bat or something?

No, it just happens over time, or as the doc said, it could be a heredity type thing and could run in the family.

Yeah, mash, the doc told me about the mesh thing, and that after it's all healed up I should be good to go again. At least I will get it done early so that I'm not out of comission during the summer when I like to mountain bike ride.

Oh well...

I think it is more of a "run in the male sex" thing. Pretty sure this hernia is usually the result from a small opening left in the inguinal ligament after a man's berries head south.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. Its gonna suck but I doubt you are really held back by it.

Wow, that is a good observation, Hoofbite!

Because when I had my vasectomy the doctor did have a little trouble on that side (the right side). But that was 17 years ago.

Oh well, no turning back now, I gotta get it fixed.

I didn't mean vasectomy. I was just talking about when a males testes descend during fetal development.

But, you are probably right in pointing at that operation. It probably is at least partly responsible.

I just read up on it, because I didn't want to be confused over what the difference is between a "Inguinal" hernia and a "Hiatal" hernia (which I have).

Your "inguinal" hernia DOES sound like something that's not too bad, but should be taken care of. Especially if your active and work out as you stated. Sounds like a simple "over nighter" at the hospital too. Your hernia is all I ever though hernia's were, until I got my hernia.

I got a "hiatal" hernia. It's when the top of the stomach itself extends UP into the diaphram resulting in a small part of the stomach literally being up and out of it's correct place.

It hit me one morning after a late night of Poker and a few two many glasses of Brandy. It felt and tasted like I just swallowed a gallon of rotten sour-kraut or pickles. Just nasty................I blew it of, as all men do, for a couple weeks until I just HAD to go get it checked out.

Turns out, according to my Doctor, that around HALF of the adult population has this condition to one degree or another. I'm like "you're telling me that HALF THE PEOPLE in America have this miserable, rotten thing??" Yep....................

Surgery is highly discouraged, as it only makes it easier to re-occur. The solution is to self-test yourself as to what makes YOUR hiatal hernia go off. For some folks it's spicy food, others is sweets, etc, etc, etc..........For me, it's ALCOHOL!! Imagine that?? Forever felled from enjoying a snort over some stupid stomach hernia?!?!?! I also spend a couple times a day standing upright, raising my heels as high as I could, and slamming my heels back to the ground. This causes the stomach to fall back where it belongs temporarily, and provides normalcy until it re-herniates again......................

It's a curse, man...........................

Oh...I thought that when you said "went South" I was thinking you were on to something, because mine definitely went South! I still have the tools, just nothing to build anything with anymore...thank god!!

After I came back from the doc today, I went to WebMD and checked out all of the various types of hernias. Yours is worse then mine but it can be taken care of.

My surgery will be an out patient thing...go in, get it fixed, and come home the same day and just chill for 3 or 4 days, then in a month or so I can resume doing what I do.

Good luck...bro!

Well, thanks bro, but this thread is about your health condition and I don't want to hijack it talking about poor old ME!!!

Your's sounds like it's no "walk in the park" either. My hernia is not life threatening, nor can it lead to other, more dangerous conditions. Yours can if not detected and treated rightly and swiftly. So I pleased that you've identified the problem and are taking quick stops to remedy the situation.

If I were a younger man (I'm 49), I might've done something about it like surgery. But at my age, the best advice I got is to just live with it and don't consume anything that will aggravate it. Honestly, If I don't drink (I drink wine now, occasionally) I don't even know its there. Because it's a hernia that's "up high" and not "down low", it's instantly impacted by whatever I put in my mouth. The instant I swallow, I know if I just shouldn't have ate or drank that. That's how fast it reacts!!

So, you're hernia, you deal with the pain or discomfort after digestion. Mine, it's before digestion or before it even goes past my diaphram. Smoking (which I do) doesn't help either......................

That makes so much sense....

It's amazing, the things we talk about that we would otherwise not touch with a ten foot poll.......................until it happens to YOU!!!

For heavens sake, we're having a conversation about HERNIA'S here!!

What's next? Ear wax? Buggars? Navel lint? Jeez.............what's happened to me? I used to be so cool.............

Now, I have "man boobs" and know everything about hernia's...............

Well, I had my surgery yesterday and I am up and walking around just fine! A little sore, but I am NOT going to take any of that narcotic that they prescribed for me.

It was not bad at all...in and out in about 3 hours, walking around after I got home 1/2 hour later.

(not that anyone cares)!
