I guess one of my big pet peeves is breaking down the defense too specifically.
For one thing, the media and the fans usually don't know the play calls and the responsibilties. Instead, they guess and assign blame based on that. So you get comments about how so and so played well while the other guy sucked. In truth, it might be the exact opposite.
For another thing, fans tend to concentrate on specific players instead of the broad, general picture. For instance, no DB is going to look good without a pass rush. Likewise, you can't complain about not getting sacks if you aren't able to stop the run. It's all related and connected.
I have no problem saying that things on the defensive side didn't look smooth. Guys seemed a little tentative at times, and I thought you saw a team that wasn't quite sure what to do at times. Was it playing the new scheme in live fire? Was it because they got punched in the nose first thing with a deep pass play? Was it because they were missing three of their top five defenders?
What's the point guessing though? The defense, in general, still needs work. I'll be very interested in hearing what the coaches and players say though. That matters to me far more than what message boards say - unless it's Adam
