I guess one of my big pet peeves is breaking down the defense too specifically.

For one thing, the media and the fans usually don't know the play calls and the responsibilties. Instead, they guess and assign blame based on that. So you get comments about how so and so played well while the other guy sucked. In truth, it might be the exact opposite.

For another thing, fans tend to concentrate on specific players instead of the broad, general picture. For instance, no DB is going to look good without a pass rush. Likewise, you can't complain about not getting sacks if you aren't able to stop the run. It's all related and connected.

I have no problem saying that things on the defensive side didn't look smooth. Guys seemed a little tentative at times, and I thought you saw a team that wasn't quite sure what to do at times. Was it playing the new scheme in live fire? Was it because they got punched in the nose first thing with a deep pass play? Was it because they were missing three of their top five defenders?

What's the point guessing though? The defense, in general, still needs work. I'll be very interested in hearing what the coaches and players say though. That matters to me far more than what message boards say - unless it's Adam ;)

Roy's play is definitely disconcerting. He's just lost out there and has been for two seasons. I don't know what's up with him but this is not the guy that we drafted and played outstanding football his first three seasons in the league....

:hammer:

Roy's gotten beaten up too much in the past, but he was awful tonight. He didn't make a single play, and I can't understand why. I really thought Roy must have been playing hurt the second half of last year, because he didn't even act like the same player he'd been. But tonight he was the same way. I'm not sure what could have happened to him.

And the way Henry labored after Burress on that long TD was very disturbing. Plaxico isn't even fast by NFL standards, and Henry couldn't come close to catching him. Henry's not fast for an NFL corner either, but still, he shouldn't get beat like that.

And oh by the way... I think the people giving Reeves grades of C or D or especially F are absolutely out of their minds.
