A.J. Brown traded to Patriots

I'm glad that Brown is no longer with the Eagles. They are replacing him with a first-round receiver but that doesn't mean that receiver is going to be any good or that he'll hit the ground running his rookie year. But the Eagles got a first-round pick plus for a receiver who for whatever reasons was just 19th-best in the league last year. That's good value for the Eagles right now. Maybe Brown will show that he's much better than the 19th-best receiver and the Eagles will lose the deal, especially if their first-rounder becomes an All-Pro, but right now, it looks to me that Roseman took advantage of another team like he did with the Bradford and Wentz deals. The Patriots are hoping to get much more for what they paid than what Brown showed last year.

Barkley was never going to live up to the numbers he put up the previous year. In fact, most backs have a come-down year after a year like that.

Yes, the Eagles offense was bad, but how much did Brown play a role in that? Dez Bryant had a nine-year NFL career, but injuries started robbing him of some of the things he did best in his sixth year. He put up his best YPC in his eighth year, but he wasn't the same player and didn't get back to 1,000 yards per season his last three years in Dallas. I'm not saying that Brown is in the same boat as Bryant, but he missed time in 2024 with a hamstring injury and he missed time in 2025 with a hamstring injury. Wear and tear gets to all players if they play long enough.

Again, that doesn't mean that Brown is at that point, but I would have been wary about trading a first-round pick for him at this point.

I don’t recall AJ having injuries like Dez did. Pats were in the SB. If they had AJ Brown they may have won it so I see the argument to go all in.

Smith, the No. 2 receiver, put up about the same numbers as Brown, the No. 1.

Let me ask you this, would you trade a first and a fifth for Smith?

No one is blaming Brown. I'm simply saying the numbers don't warrant the compensation. New England is betting on the reasons for the numbers being because Philly's offense was bad and not that Brown is declining. I wouldn't have made that bet with Roseman at the price of a first-round pick. Roseman generally seems to know when to get rid of a player, and still get a good return on them.

I mean, name the last player Howie traded who went on to have a better season with his new team. Not players who left in free agency, but those Roseman shopped. I'd probably have to go back to DeMarco Murray in 2016. Murray washed out in Philly and Roseman traded him to Tennessee for a fourth-round pick swap. Murray average 4.4 YPC and rushed for nearly 1,300 yards. That's the only one I can think of where the player performed better for his next team than he had for the Eagles.

Again, as I mentioned, he's had hamstring injuries each of the last two seasons, missing three games in 2024 and two in 2025. Hamstrings can be recurring, especially as players wear down, and take some spring and speed out of the legs. Dez's injuries were more serious and took a toll on him faster.

We appear to disagree on his value. I think New England got jobbed. You think Brown's past success and Philly's offense struggles make it a worthwhile gamble. We're not going to agree on that.

I do think we can both agree that we're happy he's no longer an Eagle. I'm for anything that may weaken a division foe.

I wouldn’t have traded a 1st and 5th for Smith. For Brown? Probably would've. Not a 2027 but for sure a 2028.

The Chip Kelly era they gave away talent…

Howie typically doesn’t trade players the caliber of AJ. So I can’t say they’ve done it.

I go back to what Waddle got traded for. If that set the market then yeah they got a steal. I’d agree id it was a 2027 1st. But a 2028 1st….you essentially give the Pats two years to either be good or be a playoff team to devalue the pick. It’s why I liked the Quinnen trade for the Cowboys. I liked the idea of giving up a first later than now.

Anyone could’ve had Pickens for a 1 or a 2 and no one offered the Cowboys anything. Nevermind they got him for a 3 and a 5. His value is not as high as you guys think it is.

He traded Bradford for a first and conditional fourth. He traded Wentz for a first and third. So I'd say that the league disagrees with you. Teams often appear to think that the Eagles players might be better than they are.

I don't think the Waddle trade was a good one either. His production didn't warrant that much. But like with the Patriots, the Broncos believe they might be one player away from a Super Bowl victory.

The fact that he’s going to want one of the largest contracts ever given to a wide receiver has to give other teams pause. AJ Brown is cheap compared to what it’s going to take to sign Pickens. That effects his value.

I think AJ was a bad influence in the locker room. When they melted down AJ was a distraction. I’ll miss having that negative impact on their team. I do agree Hurts is pretty tough but the rest of the team could have been affected by AJ antics.
