How many teams are truly in “throw away future assets to win now” mode? 5? Less? So that can’t be the reason 1 first rounder is worth considerably less than another.

The entire reason that philosophy started is because GM’s and HC’s need talent infusions now to keep their jobs. Theres no other process to hold fast to that mindset of devaluing your team’s future. A GM like Jerry or Howie who knows beyond reasonable doubt he will be employed in 2028 can take advantage of the GM’s who don’t know that. Today do you look back and think about how much more valuable your 2020 1st was than your 2021 1st? The idea serves a specific purpose that some teams are exempt from.

if value was only derived by gm’s sure. immediate assets will always be a premium though for reasons beyond that. howies obviously exceptional, but this is a serious spin job.

Traded for Metchie….

I agree with the first part: the 2027 1st was just flat out better than the 2028 1st, even ignoring what the draft classes look like

But at the same time a 2027 2nd shouldn’t be close to worth a 2028 1st. That is immense devaluing

The other issue is how to value future picks? It's a lot harder to guess where that pick might land in the first round the further out you get. So, that alone devalues it. Sure, it's a guessing game. But, I feel a lot better guessing on where a 2027 pick might land than a 2028 pick.
