So far the 2018 Cowboys season has been a bummer. And because of the “leadership” we continue to have at the top, it’s also been hard to find a lot to be hopeful about.
Well here’s a bright light in these dark days- Jaylon Smith. And let me gladly say I was wrong about him in the recent past. I never thought I would see Jaylon make plays again like we saw him make at Notre Dame when he was the best LB in CFB. He’s not 100% of what he was back then, but he’s getting close.
Watching Jaylon fly across the field last Sunday night to stonewall DeShaun Watson from the goal line was a sight to behold. His stat line against Hou was amazing- 12 combined tackles, including 3 TFL and 2 QB hits.
After 5 games this year, Jaylon is already way ahead of the pace he had last year for total tackles. Last year, in 16 games, he had 81 combined tackles. So far this year, he has 41 in 5 games. At this pace, he will have about 120 tackles, nearly 40 more than last year.
And while he still has some occasional problems getting off blocks, this guy has definitely turned a corner. If he can improve his pass coverage, he will become the complete player he was drafted to be. He’s not there yet, but I never thought I would see what we have seen so far this year.
In midst of a season that has sucked so far, keep an eye on Jaylon Smith. He may be a real bright spot in a time when they are hard to find.
