I expressed my concern before training camp that this team would fail. I came to that conclusion because of several issues.
A. Robinson was let go. The Romo made him comments are now being shown to not be the case. I understand the money aspect, but the guy made the other receivers better.
B. No pass rush besides Ware. Corners are nice - very nice - and this defense is becoming for real, but Ware needs some kind of help.
C. Interior offensive line. Bernadeau is horrid. Livings is playing slightly better than I suspected he would, but still the line play is sketchy.
However. I still think this team has something in the tank. Not for this season, but the coming one next July.
This needs to happen.
1. Acquire two guards. Starters, not back-ups or potential. I think Cook can play at center, and even Costa has some upside now. But this team needs guards.
** An option would be to move Free to guard and get a tackle. I actually like that better.
2. Replace Spencer with a real pass rusher. I have started calling Spencer Almost. Because that's what he brings. Almost.
3. If Wes Welker hits the market, move Heaven and Earth to sign him. The dimension he would being to the field for both Romo and the other receivers would be immeasurable.
4. Find a back-up to Murray in the event he continues being injured when the wind changes. I think he is greatness, but am getting concerned.
5. Take the play calling away from Garrett.
Now I want Garrett fired and a new coach. Someone that will scare the crapola out of the players. The soft spoken brainiac, or the crotchety old vet, or the butterball on the verge of heart failure will not work any longer.
I have said for years the entitlement this team feels is generated by coaches that are afraid to scare the crapola out of these players.
All the examples of other coaches that weren't this way has been wrong. They may have been soft spoken, but that is not what this team needs. It needs a firebrand so when a guy like Scandrick begins making boneheaded plays the Alpha dog coach is in his face before he gets off the field.
It's time to bring in someone who they fear more than losing.
**Note I did not mention getting a new GM. I would like to have Eliot Wolf or Ozzie Newsome. But that will not happen. And since talking about Jones upsets people, I thought I would not put this on my list.
But, I do believe Romo has a couple of more rodeos in him and protecting him, getting the running game fired up, add a stud receiver that is sure handed and swift - and not these lame receivers like Breastly and Ogletree, but a real chain mover - and get the pressure guy will turn this around.
But Garrett relinquishes the reins to the offense, or it won't matter.
The defense is there, and the linebackers - if you replace Almost Spencer - could be one of the best sets in the league.
Change the protection, get the running game back on track, and a receiver - hopefully Welker - and this team will thrive.
Just my opinion.
