We've all seen the old leather football helmets.
Helmets became mandatory equipment in the NFL in 1943. Four years prior to that the NCAA made them mandatory.
The helmet manufacturer who has been around the longest is Riddell. Riddell started making the plastic helmets that are the origin of today's helmets in 1939.
Back in 1955 Paul Brown and a designer from Riddell invented the first facemasks. It was the single bar.
All helmets were solid colors until 1948 when a player for the Los Angeles Rams named Fred Gehrke started painted the Ram horns on the side of his helmet.
In 1960 the Cowboys first helmet was solid white with a solid navy blue star and two navy blue stripes bordering a white stripe down the middle of the helmet.
This helmet was used by the Cowboys from 1960 to 1963.
In 1964 the helmet changed from white to Silver and the blue star also had a white outline.
These helmets were used from 1964 to 1966.
In 1967 the Cowboys added the blue outline around the white outline.
This has been the Cowboys helmet style since 1967 with the exception of one year. In 1976 the blue stripe on the right side of the helmet was replaced with a red stripe to honor the bicentennial celebration of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
