You have to feel a little sorry for the guy's bad luck sometimes. He went 10-6 in Buffalo and finished 3rd in his division, and the year he took Buffalo to 11-5, that was only good for 2nd in the division...haha.
Not defending Wade Phillips in any way, but it's not an easy job to win anywhere as Gruden's and Cowher's records will attest.
Gruden was a head coach for five years before winning a SB with someone else's team...fired twice.
Cowher was the head coach in Pittsburgh for 14 years before he won a SB, and he followed that great season with 8-8 and retirement the very next season. He missed the playoffs entirely for 5 of his final 9 seasons, yet Tomlin took the same team and won right after him...but people think he's a football god?!
It's a funny game, boys, and winning championships, even with the great defenses and running games, etc. that Cowher had in Pittsburg isn't easy.
14 years before winning despite having one of the most stable and supportive jobs in the NFL. I wouldn't begin to put Wade in either of these guys' shoes because he has struggled in the playoffs and hasn't won anything, but it's a little unfair after 3 winning seasons in Dallas and making the playoffs 2-3 years to call him such an idiot after a poor start this year. While no one was happy with the loss to Minny in the playoffs, most fans around here and in the media were finally giving Wade Phillips mad props after last year's December and two convincing wins over Philly with a playoff loss.
He may not be in the same class as Gruden or Cowher, but if Cowher didn't win a championship in the first 3-4 years and missed the playoffs a couple of times, Cowboys fans would likely be calling him a has-been and looking for another coach...much less waiting with their owner for 14 seasons.
It's a hard game to play, and a hard game to coach, but mostly it's a hard game in which to win consistently and you only have a 3% chance of winning a championship in any given year.
In Dallas we did it the first time by hiring a smart young coach and being patient with him for many years; the second time we did it by catching lightning in a bottle with a former college coach who found the right players at the right time, but was never able to do it anywhere else.
We all want that lightning in the bottle again, but maybe we should hire a smart young coach and give him some time to get it right.

Oh yeah, the Wade stats were just for a fun comparison as he's had short, difficult stints everywhere before coming to Dallas, but his stats will take a big hit with this season.
