After 3 weeks of preseason (except for Detroit & St. Louis), Dallas is #1 in NFL scoring defense @ 10.7/game, per NFL.com. Take away Swinton's return and ...

Yes, amazing what happens when you replace a poorly coached "occupy & enagage" passive & predictable scheme with a TOUGH coming at you 3-4! :D

Its only going to get better!

Here's a little more...

6th in Total D, 4th in 3rd down %, 5th in 1st downs/game, 5th in yards/play.
14th in Pass D (2 TDs, 4 ints, 7 sacks)
3rd in Rush D (0 TDs allowed, 9 1st downs)

Also, #2 in Gross punting average, # 3 Net.

good point....i'd rather be at the top than at the bottom...even if it is pre-season.

Absolutely meaningless. But I can take some things from the preseason without looking at overall scoring defense. For instance, our starters have been taking the ball away from the other team's starters. I think that's a product of the scheme, since Parcells coached Giants teams took the ball away as well. In both 85 and 86 the Giants had 24 interceptions a year, in the top 5 annually. Our D, playing the same scheme, seems to be getting it's share of picks already. To me a stat like that is just about guys making plays because they are in a position to do so. It's not about trickery or gameplanning, you just put guys in a position where they can win a battle against the other guy and then see if they do. I think once we start to add in the full blitz packages and get more comfortable with scheme we should be able to do even more of that.

I put VERY little stock in the preseason both with respect to stats and wins and losses........oh wait, that is a stat.

Meaningless I say.

Depends on how we ended up that way. If our 3rd string and bubble players were giving up points against first and second teamers would it really matter? I don't think so. Teams don't play their starters for the same amount of time, sometimes you end up with backups vs starters one way or the other. Or maybe one team plays more of it's fringe players to evaluate whether or not they'll make the roster, in that case you might give up some plays by guys who are simply playing themselves off of the squad.

The same occupy and engage that two years ago was number one? Fact. Personnel was the problem, not Zimmer. He's still the D coach, you know.

Your comments have gone past annoying.

I argued then that our D was overrated. We were number 1 in yards, but we didn't take the ball away and we weren't number 1 in points. I caught much flak for believing that our D was not nearly as good as a number 1 rating would have someone believe. Now looking back on it I'm sure a lot more people agree with me.

I always did. Yards mean nothing to me. Takeaways, sacks, and holding the opponent down in scoring, that is how you win a lot of games and become a contender.

Your comments will do a fly by Hoods.

They're right as rain on personnel, but they'll do a fly by.

I agree that it was overrated but "number 1", none-the-less. I truely believe that if it wasn't for our defense we wouldn't have made the play-offs.

:hammer:

Heaven knows our offense wasn't putting points on the board at any kind of make me giddy rate.

The D was better than advertised, and last year poorer than expected. Darren Woodson was the glue.
