Today however, we take a look ahead, not behind. Enter Jeff Heath.
To me, this post feels a little reminiscent of my post about Beasley. If memory serves, many folks simply didn't see his value to the team, and I wasn't quite so sure that was the case. The same applies today for Heath. I'd like to open with a hat-tip to this post by goose916, which also received some notoriety from the Front Page link. Now in general, I think that my positive/negative outlook opinions run counter to those of goose, but that's simply immaterial ;) I certainly agree that Heath is underrated and underappreciated on this board, even if he is apparently not seen the same way by the coaching staff.

Let's start here.
AKOYE Media has put up a bunch of videos dealing with Cowboys analysis. I'm not particularly a fan of the vitriol he has for the Dez release/Dak Offense - but again, that's not germane to this discussion. He's certainly entitled to use his platform to say what he wants and voice how he feels (I really do get what he's saying) - but what I'm interested in today is his views on Heath. This is a lot of time to invest, but I think these are VERY MUCH worth watching. In order from oldest to newest:

Jeff Heath: Is He In The Way Or On The Way ?

Akoye: Respect Jeff Heath (Also Special Unveiling At The End)

Jeff Heath's Not Guilty (Every Passing TD Against The Cowboys Secondary)

Note: I also recommend looking at the videos for Safety play from our other roster guys that AKOYE has presented. It's worth it.

Now I could probably end this post right here, standing solely on the shoulders of someone who has done the actual legwork of analysis, but I have a few more things to say.

Sir Thomas, the Earl of Seattle
He's the man, right? I won't argue that he has had a great career and is an extremely talented player. I found this highlight video of his play, in case you've never taken the time to watch him.

Heath is a backup. Stop mucking up the board with this low standard nonsense. We have all watched him whiff tackles and get burned for years. Heath will be replaced as soon as we actually get some safeties in there that arent 5th and 7th round picks.

i'm sure heath is a good person and he tries his best but i can't wait for the day he is no longer on this team. just very limited.

Heath does have limitations, but he's the best over the top FS we've had in a while. He makes plays, and he improved through last season.

He's a great guy to have back there if you've really got a pass rush. Which looks likely this year. Heath has shown that he has the instincts, speed, and hands to track down errant balls.

What was the point of this article? The underlying tone seems to be we don't need Thomas for what he'll cost, Heath is maybe going to be just as effective.

If that's the point, holeeeeeeee poop balls.

Limited? He plays safety, he is a special teams ACE, and he kicks field goals. His rookie year, I think he played every special teams, and when our safties went down, he played. He was UNDRAFTED. Heath is awesome for what he is.

You would miss him on special teams. He makes the tackle or is a few steps away

Heath is what he is. He has filled a role, or several decently, works hard, and whatnot so I don’t have a lot of animosity towards him it’s just that he’s limited as a S and Earl Thomas is one of the elite Ss in the game. Like asking people if they’d prefer Dak or signing Aaron Rodgers if he was available. I.e a huge no brainer.

JEFF HEATH!

The man that set up 3rd and 20 with a blitz and sack on Rodgers in the playoffs.
The man who single handidly won the game in Oakland.
The man who has lead the team in picks each of the last two years.
He's our backup kicker! (lol)

JEFF HEATH!

Why oh why do Cowboys fans hate this man?

It’s corny and sad. Cowboy fans perpetuate the narrative that were uninformed fans that don’t know the game. Same fanbase screaming on 4th and 1 on the goal line.

I keep expecting all the Cowboys fans who hate Crawford to love Jeff Heath for the same reasons. Doesn’t seem to work that way, though.

Heath is a very good player. It's not like he's surrounded by all pros. He makes some plays, is a very special teamer and bailed us out a couple of times. Better coaching and the secondary getting acclimated will help all.
