I pretty much try to do this every year. In spite of the asinine comments that are sure to follow such as "what do you care you act like it is your money" I will persevere.

IMHO you need look no further than over the cap. It will tell you literally everything you need to know about your football team. Why are we no good? Lets examine who we thought would be good:

Dak at 50.5 million dollar cap hit. I mean he is serviceable but is he elevating this team? I will not waste time on this one. FYI I would not look into the future on this cap hit if I were you. Ouch.

Terrence Steel is next at 18.125 million. I guess he is fine.

Lamb is next at 15.3 million probably the best bang for your buck on the team.

Our first defensive player on the list comes in next and is Diggs at 12 million. This is brutal. If that guy is the highest paid defender on your entire team you have lost before you even start.

Next on the list (not counting dead money) is Donovan Wilson (8.6 million) and Malik Hooker (7.75 million). I am not making this stuff up folks. These are the three highest paid defenders on the team.

Now you gotta start to look at the dead money. An area that we a particularly specialized in.

Zack Martin at 8.8 million. Thanks Zack. Oh and by the way in case you are wondering what his cap hit is next year it is 16.6 million. Thanks again Zack.

Gallup coming in next at 8.7 million. This one seems flat out crazy.

Our good buddy D Law comes in next at 7.5 million.

Next is 4 million for Brandin Cooks. Again I am not making this up.

This just about sums it up. The team was expecting Dak, Lamb and Steele to carry with a powerful offense. The defense would be an after thought and would be held together by Diggs, Hooker and Wilson.

Good lord, PFT is reporting that Jerry could trade the Packers picks for players to improve the defense.

Excellent thread and insightful research. Ppl conveniently gloss over the Zack Martin holdout and cave by Jerry, but it's set this team back. These guys are terrible at the cap...Gallup $8M really? Gallup has retired and come back and is still on the books. Just wait till Dak is done, can you say Bobby Bonilla?

All I can say is there is about half this forum that could manage the Cowboys better than Jerry. Some of us didn't want to pay Dak or Diggs...

Good post. They can get out of Diggs and Steele contracts after this season and save quite a bit.

Another guy they need to move on from is hooker. He has no legs left. They save 7 million after the season.

what you describe are symptoms of what the problem is. bad GM, who can't put the right personnel together, can't manage the cap and can't build a team.

go back a decade and do the numbers and its the same thing.

and a decade before that, the same thing.

this is just the latest.

by the way, you put up a lot of the dead cap money. every team has it and we complain about players. then cut them and take the hit, then complain about the dead cap hit. you can't have it both ways. same thing is going to happen with Steele. you have him on the list, if we cut him next year, there is dead cap.

Eagles check in at 81.6 in dead cap this year.....It's funny money,,,find good players and no one cares about dead cap...
I promise if the Cowboys start playing and winning superbowls I won't be posting stuff like this. I will happily eat all the dead money you can cram down my throat.

Heres what shouldve been done if we had a football first GM

After the packers playoff loss you clean house and yes that includes Quinn……sorry, love him to death

You keep Micah and CeeDee and thats about it

The season we’re having now? We shouldve had this last year and been done with it

Amateur GM and we are surprised?

If you are suggesting they have made some terrible personnel decisions, then yes, that is the problem.

At the same time this team believes its own hype. The draft a guy and immediately declare him a big positive for the team. We hear the same thing every year. Draft picks all come with promise, but good teams are objective when they evaluate talent. Jerry believes Dak is great because he pays him $60 million. Dak never achieved anything to warrant that kind of money. Not even close.

Jerry believe a player is good because Jerry drafted him in the first or 2nd round, ignoring that he might be the only one that would have taken that player in that round.

And fans are just as guilty of this nonsense. We heard Booker was going to step with in for Zack Martin. We heard Ezeiruaku was going to be a serious threat opposite Micah. Now we are hearing how great Revell is going to be despite that fact he is coming off an injury and missed TC and preseason. He hasn't player anything that looks like a profession down yet. But trust Jerry, he will be an all pro-someday. Like Eric Scott was a steal, and so was Caelen Carson.

Smart teams look at their players and make objective honest assessment because this is the only way to get better. They don't hang on to their mistakes.

Remember Zeke? Before Dallas finally let him go was all saw him slowing down and becoming less effective. Jerry didn't He gave Zeke a new contract for more than Zeke would ever earn. Jerry cannot be objective when it comes to his players, not even Micah Parsons. And I don't want to hear this nonsense about Micah getting a 4 year $47 million contract. His contract is for 5 years at about $42 million if he remains with the Packers for the entire term of the contract. I would argue Micah earned that money way more than Dak earned his.
