Since everyone says you need 3 years lets go back
who would you have taken? This is looking like the cowboys had the best draft, 2003 didn't have a lot of talent. maybe cinci with carson palmer and steinbach

1. TNew - Other available DTKevin williams. I'd say that's a push, probably would rather have kevin. Outstanding pick nonethless considering what else was available in hindsight.

2. Al Johnson - Others available Anquan Boldin, Osi. I think Al can be a pro bowler, but not on the cowboys. maybe denver, falcons, or texans.

3. Jason Witten - Derrick Dockey maybe, not much else. Perfect Pick!

4. Bradie James - again, no one.

6. BJ Tucker - Not much, Maybe Drew Henson to save a 3rd and $8m :laugh2:
6. Zuriel Smith - Again not much
7. Justin Bates - josh brown ;)

This makes sense to me to look back at this draft and giving it an honest analysis...

3 of the first 4 are starters and the other is a reserve. The starters are pro bowl material so I'd call that a pretty successful draft.

K Josh Brown was available in the 7th round.

The Cowboys were also extremely lucky that Tony Romo signed as FA.

Mat McBriar was also undrafted that year.

Second day was a disaster cause none of those 3 players amounted for anything with the Cowboys. Of course on the other hand, we signed Romo as an undrafted Qb within 1-2 days of that draft. Maybe we should include him as our 8th draftee. Ha. That would sure drive up this draft grade now.

some decent guys were available late but nothing to cry about.

cato june, tully banta cain, arnaz battle.

decent special teamers like ponder or tyree.

josh brown was also there for the taking.

There is no one available that I would take over Newman from that draft.
Nobody.

I wanted Leftwich. I think BP could have made him a very good QB. He is good, just not worth his pick. As it turned out, Newman was THE pick. A DT can be found virtually anytime, but a top CB is a true diamond.
It can be argued that his first draft will end up being his best; 3 possible Pro bowlers is as good as you can get. 2005 draft looks like at best we get one PB- Ware. I do not really say any of the others making the PB.

They just are not starters Big Dog. They are starters with aspirations of Hawaiian Luaus.

well, this is an imperfect game to play, but i love to play it. so here goes:

you could say that dallas would be better off with
rb larry johnson in round one and
cb rashean mathis is round two (taken one pick after al johnson)

...instead of newman and johnson. but i do think newman is great, and i was perfectly happy with the pick at the time. i did not think then that we should have taken leftwich, and i haven't had much cause to reconsider that ever since.

i think the witten pick in round three was golden. i think, too, that he needs to be used more as a pass catcher.

lb bradie james in round four is now paying dividends... at the time, he sounded like a steal, so i've been disappointed at how long it has taken for him to play at this level.

sixth rounders b.j. tucker and zuriel smith were pertty useless; in hindsight, wr arnaz battle and lb cato june, both taken lower down in the round, would have contributed more.

g justin bates, from the seventh round, accomplished zilch. meanwhile, k josh brown, taken a few picks later, has been pretty darn good.

throwing hindsight out the window, though, i think now (like i thought then, to be honest)that the picks for the first four rounds were very strong -- with the possible exception of johnson in round two, since i thought for sure we would take de chris kelsay -- and that everything thereafter was pretty much a waste.

you can raise almost the same questions about the 2002 draft.

yes, we got roy williams in round one, but we left dwight freeney on the board... i love roy williams, but i'd have to say that we cold have used freeney a little more.

in round two, we took andre gurode and passed on clinton portis.

in round three, we took derek ross... well, okay, round three pretty much sucked for everyone.

in round four we took jamar martin over najeh davenport... doh!

after that, almost everyone is forgettable.

Day 1 was good. I can honestly say that had I been running the '03 draft for us, we would've ended up with TNew, Boldin, Witten, Cato June, and Josh Brown. But I would've missed Bradie James and taken Lee Suggs (Mr Whizzinator) instead.

I thought Witten was the best TE coming out that year and he was the 4th TE taken. I was amazed. I thought Boldin was the best WR in that draft, he was just a ridiculous athlete at FSU. I thought TNew was the money pick.

Our second day was garbage other than James. I remember wanting Lee Suggs, Torrence Holt, Cato June, and Josh Brown. I was embarrased by the BJ Tucker and Justin Bates picks.

With this logic every team in the NFL passed on Tom Brady, Joe Montana etc.

It's really an exercise in futility.

Don't forget passing on Tom Brady in 2000. We took Mario Edwards instead..........

that Jamar Martin pick was just sad... the people on this Board know who they are... defending that woeful pick!!!

every team passes on players every year... But it seems the Cowboys Day2 picks remind many of Jerry Jones mid 90s picks!!!

lets not ever judge a draft because before 3 yrs is too soon and after 3 yrs its an exercise in futility!
