A lot of draft thoughts

Had time to digest everything from last night and have to say that it was a very entertaining draft. My friends know I am a Cowboys diehard, so EVERYONE was in on the Manziel lottery....texting me and harassing me. Would he make it to 16? Would we take him? It was great drama....in the chat room I said it more than once...I prayed that when we get to 16 Manziel is there along with a couple of guys that most here had chatted up....Donald, Barr, Martin. Really coming in those were the guys I thought were possible, with my wildcard being a WR if one was still there. Jones has confirmed that Donald, Barr, Martin and Shazier were our targets....so I like the fact that we didn't give in to hype and just took the best guy left on our board.

The pressure points to me were Tampa and Minnesota...getting past them I almost felt certain we would get one of our top 4 or a trade down. Wasn't surprised that Barr went first out of the group. Edge rushers tend to go high. A little wind went out of the sails when Donald came off the board....the Rams are trying to build one hell of a defense for sure.

I gotta give Manziel credit....he took the fall better than most and when Cleveland made the pick, he put on a good show. Whether he personally likes it or not, he probably gained some serious good will with the fans of Cleveland...he looked like he was happy to have the chance. I wouldn't have hated having him in Dallas and see some merit to picking him...but at the end of the day I think we did the right thing.

Outside of Dallas' pick, I am most interested in what our rivals did. Obviously, the Commanders didn't do a thing. Bwahahaha. The Giants pick of Beckham surprised me a little in that I felt Martin would have been a better pick for them, but with Nicks leaving and Manningham an injury waiting to happen, it makes sense. Eli had an awful year and needs help. I think OL might have been a bigger need for them. The Eagles pick makes me scratch my head a little....definitely seems to be a reach to me. Smith is decent but I don't think anyone had him as a first rounder....that is the beauty of the draft I guess. I think we come out of the first round with the best pick of anyone in our Division.

The one guy I am happiest for is Sammy Watkins. He is a great kid. He graduated from South Fort Myers, which is the nearest high school to me....my son graduated from there in and just finished his first year in college. He was never athletically inclined but he really liked Sammy and had classes with him and Sammy treated him with respect despite the fact they had almost nothing in common. Sammy was one of the best to come out of the state of Florida in his graduating class, and while he has special physical skills, he is just a really hard worker. He has earned it.

Finally, looking at what our day two fortune looks like. While I could see there being a really good Offensive player available, I think we have to look defense. I was bummed that Ward went as high as he did....I think S is a huge need but like it happened in so many of the mocks I did, the best safeties never made it to 47. I don't think there will be value at the spot at our pick, so I think the focus goes to DE, DT and LB. I feel very sure that at least one of the following will be there....Lawrence, Crichton, Ealy, Jernigan and Hageman. Ealy would be the last out of that group that I would pick. There are going to be some really good OL there, possibly a stud WR and I still would keep QB as a wildcard.

I think third round will be more open to any position than the second round will be. I think it really will be best player available....I saw first round as BPA, and second is BPA based on need to me. Guys I kind of hope are there and would like to target are G. Jackson, T. Brooks, Attaochu, K. Martin, T. Murphy and M. Bryant. Of these, I would probably still go defense first, with Attaochu my preferred target.

Hoping for a great night.

We have no choice but to draft defense with both picks today. I wish we had 3 picks honestly and I would go defense with all 3. Ward geting taken so high really bummed me out. Really wanted him at 47. Not sure when the value will come back to that position. Overall a good post!

Didn't know you lived in Fort Myers. I used to have a place out there years ago. Cape Corral actually, off Bayshore. Long time ago!

Yep...pretty much a lifer here....if it has been a while you wouldn't believe all the changes.

I don't think it HAS to be defense with both but it would be my preference too. Fourth round I see a lot more possibilities at CB and LB...not as much there in the DT or DE range.

Was in Fort Myers a few years ago. Just kinda checking out the old stomping grounds kinda thing and boy you are not kidding. Completely different place now. Good memories though.

First, lol Commanders.

And, yeah, I was really impressed with how Manziel handled himself, too. I kind of like the QBs they've got there in CLE now. Is that weird?

Here's to us getting our rush end, and it being a guy we really like, early today. Once that's addressed, I can relax and just watch how the rest of the draft plays out. I'm sure there'll be chances to add DLs and LBs along the way, and for now, at least, I trust our scouts and defensive coaches to find guys that fit the scheme. But those rush players are at such a premium, and we need one badly. I can't relax until we get one on board.

Idgit...I definitely agree we need the pass rusher next....who is your guy? I like the unrelenting motor of Crichton....then Lawrence. Hoping one is there for us. I just have a freaky suspicion that we get on the clock, we are going to be in a situation where the BPA is not going to be in a need area. So, we get to that decision: BPA or BPA that fits a need? Might end up moreso in the third than the second.

I'd be ok with either guy. I like Crichton better myself, but the fact that the rumors seem to indicate the team likes Lawrence better makes it ok with me, either way.

It's tough, needing a rush end and having 14 picks ahead of us. After the QBs and the top remaining WRs go, we'll be gripping. That said, I don't want to move up in this draft unless it's a position or two up or down because we specifically need to get in front of a team for our guy. If we trade, it should be to trade down. I'd rather have more players the scouts like than fill the most glaring hole we haven't been able to address. But, man, it'd be nice to get that rush end addressed so we can relax and let the rest of the draft come to us.

A guy we haven't really talked about much but a guy that I really like later in the draft is Kirksey out of Iowa. 315 career tackles, two seasons over 100 tackles and one 95 tackle season. Can cover in space, he could be a fit for us at Weak Outside LB. Also a very good Special Teams player.

I think Lawrence goes before our pick

If there are 3-4 of the pass rushing group left when we come up...I'd entertain trade down if possible

Man I really don't want to see words like this until the 5th, maybe the 4th.
