A lot of good, some not so good...

I only got to see until the 5 minute mark of the 3rd quarter, right after Tyson Thompson scored his TD... that's when I had to leave to come to work, and the game had just ended when I got to work... I also missed the first 15 minutes of the broadcast, as a severe thunderstorm interrupted my DirecTV for that time exactly at 8PM (yes, I was annoyed)...

But I have some subjective opinions about what I saw... first, the obvious caveat-- this was a preseason game, and a first preseason game at that, so we didn't see a lot of the starters... what we should be looking for here is individual performances:

Tony Romo was efficient... nothing spectacular, merely a solid, workmanlike performance... it was good to see...

Brad Johnson was putrid... I mean, he reeked... I'm more worried than ever about our backup QB situation, this position could kill a promising season, if Tony was to get hurt...

Matt Moore looked pretty good to me... I especially liked the one bootleg he ran, then found Tony Curtis about 15 yards downfield... he looked pretty comfortable in there...

Judging from the way Anthony Fasano and Tony Curtis had monster games, Jason Witten is gonna be one happy camper this season... Jason Garrett is gonna feature the TE heavily...

The running game was underwhelming... not bad, but then again, the Colts don't exactly have a fearsome run D... about the only time the Boys got chunks of yardage via the running game was a pair of Marion Barber draw plays on third and very long... Tyson Thompson looked the best of all the RBs in this game, IMO, a development that surprised and pleased me...

I'm glad Patrick Crayton is a Dallas Cowboy, but I don't want him returning punts...

The kicking competition is getting verrrrrrrrry interesting... I'm rooting for the kid, but Gramatica is really playing pretty well...

Let's give it up for one of my Miners, Alex Obomese, forcing the int that Keith Davis returned for the TD... the only chance he stands of making the 53 man roster is to keep making plays in the preseason games...

I hear Joey Thomas had an end zone int sometime while I was driving to work... I was highly intrigued when the Boys signed him, and am quite pleased with how he's looked thus far... the team might have found themselves a keeper here...

Overall, I can see the increased speed of our defense, they were really flying to the ball out there... didn't see a lot of missed tackles, either... I would have liked to see a bit more of that pass rush, though...

By the time I left for work, the Boys had racked up 235 yards of total offense, the Colts had just 95... IMO, those stats are reflective of how the game went... a good start, a promising start, now let's build on it...

BTW, Joe Buck, Patrick Crayton is NOT a fast receiver... he's one of those possession receivers, his 40 times generally in the 4.55-4.6 second range...

The TEs really were showcased today although u could get a bit of an idea of what they want to do with TO when he was in there early on. Looks promising.
A small thing I noticed on D was that Wade's D really seems to have the lineman and LBs try and anticipate the snap count. We glad flagged once I think for offsides and in a real game Manning or another vet would have worked the hardcout but u could see that our guys were trying to get a really good jump right at the snap.

Silver I think Crayton looks fast because he has a really quick first few steps (nimble is maybe another word to use) and he can cut smoothly with out losing a lot of his speed. This makes allows him to create separation and makes him look faster than he is

We were all giddy as schoolgirls after last year's win at Seattle, so take it for what it is.

The 2nd and 3rd units had some bad pursuit angles, if it wasn't for the speed our defenders had, their running backs would have had cutbacks all night on the back ups. I am still seeing a lot of our guys running into each other when they are getting after the QB I am hoping that will rectify itself as the preseason goes on.

joey thomas was toasted out of his jock on his interception. It was one of the worst throws you will ever see in the nfl, and it looked like august.

hu? so was I the only one that was very disappointed in Thompson? For the majority of the game he seemed much slower than he was before the injury and very timid, spending most of his time dancing around in the backfield. I thought he was by far the poorest looking back of the three.

The Good

*We are three deep at RB, and Julius Jones was far and away the best. And this is good since he is the starter.

*We are three deep at TE. Wow, Fassano can cause mismatch problems in a two TE set, and if we have an injury, we have a third TE who can be dangerous as a receiver.

*We have solid depth at WR. Wow, that Sam Hurd sure can throw a block!

*The OL was impressive with tow starting RTs out.

*Keith Davis proved why Parcells was wrong to move him to FS. He's a natural SS, and showed as much with soild play, back at his natural position.

The Bad

*Roy Williams still can't cover. Every time he dropped back intro zone, the opposng QBs threw to his direction for easy completions.

*Roy Williams still can't tackle, whiffing again on a number of tackles where he lunged forward with his shoulder (instead of trying to wrap up) and the ball-carrier would simply step aside causng Roy to miss. It happened way too often.

*Our third-down defense was not that good from what I saw. This troubles me considering that this is mainly what did us in last season. Whether we're facing third and short or third and long, the opponent usaully has a good chance of converting that first down.

Yeah I noticed this too. Pretty disappointed. Hopefully he is just not used to throwing around such little weight yet and his trajectory is off...hopefully, cause he has got no more excuses

I thought Jones looked good in the beginning, but then faded. After that, Marion shredded the 2nd quarter defense and then Tyson Thompson came in to have a nice day against the scrubs....

I think he's a good back, though. But I thought Barber made the most strides. Even after the year that he had last year, he looked even stronger out there, in my opinion. And I think those who are calling for the team to play more of Barber might just get a compromise from Phillips.

I thought Barber looked the weakest of the 3 backs tonight. He ran hard, but moved sideline to sideline a lot. He also seemed to have the worst blocking of the three, though. This is not counting the long run he got up the middle on the 3rd (2nd now that McFarland's out) D.

Things I noticed:

1. Garrett runs a timing offense, and you could tell. Romo would drop back, whap pass was gone before the guy would cut out of his route, therefore cancelling out the pass rush.

2. Free is going to be a great LT ( how I know this after a freaking pre-season game, I don't, i'm gambling on what I saw) He had the speed I've been waiting to see, when those guys would speed rush.

3. Davis is a MAN! This guy, in the running game, was moving big TAckles down the field 5 to 7 yards, geesh.

4. Ware is going to be the night mare of all night mares for opposing offenses.

5. We will have a ton of opportunities to make interceptions this year.

6. Garrett looks like our next head coach.

7. Our kicking teams are great. Our coverage team sucks right now.

okay my turn

If Folk and Grammy stay somewhat tied it should go to Folk (cheaper and more upside)

Lou Pol still doesn't block very well

BJ sucks :D :eek:: ;) :p:

Free looked good the running game did not

Jr. and Ob show up but Spencer did not

Burnett & Carp were around the ball alot

Joey T... new nick "easy" cause the opp made it look easy against you (Joey did get a gift int...but don't think that will happen every week) Joey needs to tighten that coverage

Moore needs work on lots of things (especially throwing on the run) but looks to have enough to warrant development

we need a backup NT bad Stanley and the other guy worry me

kickoff coverage horrible but I suspect that will tighten up

overall lots of good but still lots of work to be done

Well, I said up front that I didn't get to actually see the game after the 5 minute mark of the third quarter...

I would have to agree with you. He looked a lot slower, or perhaps it was his indecisiveness. Battle didn't look so good either

MBIII looked like he was giving up his power game to concentrate on looking like JJones, and that wasn't working.

Jones looked the best in my opinion, but even that had a resemblance to last year.

Everyone is stating that Joey T's INT was a gift, lets see the opposing QB was flushed, had to scramble a around then make a hurried pass on the run that ended up in Joey T's arms. Remember most int's are caused by a QB's mistake not necessarily good coverage, look at Deangelo Hall.
