I’m sick and tired of hearing about the Owner’s/NFLPA/Lockout/Antitrust, etc., so I thought I’d scribble down a mock draft to help pass the time.
In this scenario, I have the Lions at pick #13 trading up with Dallas at #9 in order to select Prince Amukamara and giving the Cowboys their third round pick (#75). Dallas would have to be assured that Amukamara is the guy they will take (not Tyron Smith)… and once they are, they make the trade. Detroit apparently really likes the Nebraska corner and very well might trade up to insure that he lands in Motown.
The only team that might take Tyron Smith ahead of the #13 pick is the Vikes. However, in this mock they do not.
Rd...Pick......Player............Pos... School
1.....13*....Tyron Smith.........OT......USC
2.....40......Rahim Moore........FS......UCLA
3.....71......Ros-I Dowling.......DB......Virginia
3.....75*....John Moffett........OG......Wisconsin
4.....109....Stephen Burton.....WR.....WTA&M
5.....140....Jacq. Rodgers.......RB......Oregon St.
6.....176....Shiloh Keo............S........Idaho
7.....220....Blaine Sumner.......DT......C.S.o.M.
7.....252....Greg Lloyd............ILB.....Connecticut
*Cowboys trade back to pick #13 with Detroit, who trades up to #9 to take Prince Amukamara, CB Nebraska. Dallas gets Detroit’s third round pick, #75 overall.
#13 – Tyron Smith is the best OL prospect in the draft and will be able to solidify the RT position immediately. He has the athleticism to be a huge improvement from day one in pass protection on the right side.
#40 – Moore is a ballhawk and a very solid FS candidate who could come in and take the job in camp.
#71 – Dowling is very athletic and fluid and likely would have gone much higher without the injury concerns from his final season. For the second straight season, the Cowboys benefit from a player sliding because of health concerns (Sean Lee).
#75 – Moffett is a guy that can step in and help at guard right away. He’s smart, mean, tough and big. He plays sound football and scouts will tell you he’s a big reason Wisconsin’s run game was so dominant. He slides this far because, like the RB position, teams de-value guard in the draft.
#109 – Burton is a guy who has loads of athletic ability and really played well, even if it was a small school. He’s fast, has good hands and can watch and be groomed behind Austin and Bryant. Hopefully, he could work his way into the slot position as a rookie.
#140 – Rodgers is Marion Barber’s replacement and will compete for playing time. He isn’t a big, goal line runner… but he’s a damn good RB who has plenty of shake and runs tough.
#176 – Keo is a guy who lacks speed but really has good feet and hips. He’s the kind of guy you want in your locker room and while we know that the special teams coach will love him, I bet that Rob Ryan will find a way to use him some too.
#220 – Sumner is intense and strong as an ox. It couldn’t hurt to take a look and see if he might can play in the bigs.
#252 – A solid late round LB to groom.
The keys to this draft, IMO, are two things: Being able to add a third to drop from #9 to #13 and to still land Tyron Smith at #13 and to be able to acquire John Moffett in the third.
Moffett has the ability to start his rookie season for Dallas, and there aren’t many mid round picks that could do that. I think he’d be good enough as a rookie for Dallas to be able to at least contemplate playing him this year and cutting L Davis’ huge salary.
Two areas of need, offensive line and secondary would get two new bodies each. Both OL and both DB’s are talented and add a lot of needed athleticism and youth to position groups that are in need of both.
