... in the wake of the trade for Roy Williams... now that the Boys don't have a first rounder, what direction might they take in the draft come April?? Here's what I'd do:

Because of the depth and talent currently on the Cowboys' roster, I think that next offseason will be dedicated mostly to retaining those core players who are due to be unrestricted free agents, and the additions to the roster will come almost entirely through the draft...

And with the depth and talent of the offensive skill positions, I think the Boys will emphasize defense and offensive line help in this next draft... here's how I'd approach it, in the wake of the Roy Williams trade:

2nd round (our own pick): I see this as a small trade up, using one of the extra 4th round picks they currently have... to get the player I have targeted here, the Boys would have to move up to the middle of the second round...

Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU
... 6-4, 295 pounds, 4.85 second 40... the best pure 3-4 DE in this draft...

3rd round (Cleveland's pick)
:

Jonathan Casillas, SS, Wisconsin
... 6-1, 225 pounds, 4.45 second 40... a linebacker for the Badgers, I think that Casillas has a little Darren Woodson in him, and would make a terrific strong safety... this provides quality depth for Roy Williams, perhaps Roy's heir apparent...

4th round (Detroit's pick):

Cedric Dockery, OG, Texas... 6-4, 325 pounds, 5.25 second 40... the younger brother of Derrick Dockery, to me Cedric looks every bit as good as his big brother did in college...

5th round (Tennessee's pick):

Chase Holbrook, QB, New Mexico State... 6-5, 245 pounds, 5.0 second 40... Holbrook has put up amazing numbers for a rather bad Aggies team (70 per cent completions in his sophomore and junior seasons, nearly 8500 yards passing those two years), to me he's this draft's Colt Brennan, only bigger... would make a terrific 3rd QB for the Boys...

5th round (our own pick):

Louis Vasquez, OG, Texas Tech... 6-5, 340 pounds, 5.3 second 40... a massive widebody well-schooled in pass blocking, Louis did not allow a sack last year...

5th round (compensatory for Julius Jones)
:

Sherrod Martin, FS, Troy... 6-1, 200 pounds, 4.4 second 40... cornerback speed with safety size (Martin has played some corner)... would rank higher but he's had some injury issues in college... forced 6 fumbles last season, suggesting he's a hitter... had 3 ints versus Alcorn State back in mid-September...

6th round (Miami's pick):

Phillip Hunt, DE/OLB, Houston... 6-1, 260 pounds, 4.65 second 40... has 18.5 sacks and 30 tackles for loss the last 2 seasons, to go with 14 quarterback hurries... can also drop back into coverage, as evidenced by his 10 passes broken up last season...

6th round (compensatory for Jacques Reeves):

DeAndre Wright, CB, New Mexico... 5-11, 195 pounds, 4.45 second 40... Wright is the DB that opposing QBs try to avoid for the Lobos... in the final 7 games of last year, Wright was only thrown at 11 times when the Lobos were in man coverage... even so, in the last 2 seasons, he has 7 ints and 19 passes broken up... last year, he allowed just 2 completions of 15 yards or more...

7th round (Detroit's pick):

Brandon Swain, DE/OLB, West Texas A&M... 6-3, 260 pounds, 4.7 second 40... like Hunt, Swain is a "tweener" with some pass-rush ability... played 1 season at West Texas A&M after transferring from junior college, and had 14 sacks, 12 quarterback hurries and 24.5 tackles for loss... bluntly, he was dominant, albeit at a low level of competition... looks like a more talented Erik Walden to me...

7th round (our own pick):

Sammie Lee Hill, DT, Stillman
... 6-4, 325 pounds, 5.05 second 40... the Boys need to get bigger at NT, IMO, but there aren't too many good, big tackles in this draft... Hill is the quintessential sleeper, toiling in anonymity at tiny Stillman, but NFL scouts know him... is very active for a plugger, notching 14 tackles for loss last season...

So there you have it, a draft that features 1 DE, 1 DT, two OLBs, a CB, a FS, a SS, two OGs and a QB prospect... as I said, heavy on defense, heavy on interior offensive line help...

I'd rather go DT then go CB in the 4th......

maybe after the season, we can get him on some bogus legal issue that causes his stock to drop to the mid second round, then we can trade up a few spots and nab him.

So I was perusing some draft sites....and WaltersFootbal.com especially, cause they have a draft database. Extremeskins has a draft database as well, but they are the enemy...hehehe

Anyway....I saw something that would totally piss me off. Roy is my favorite WR in the NFL so I am stoked to have him. However, I would be completely ticked off, if the Lions got Orakpo with our 1st round pick. I want Orakpo to go to a team I don't hate or a team that we didn't give a pick to. I wouldn't mind him going to KC, Indy, or Tennessee....Imagine if Indy did get him....he would be a great compliment to Freeney....wow what a pass rush.

After further research and the realization that we have 12 picks instead of 10, I have modified my mock a little bit.

Tyson Jackson will be a 1st round pick...so he is off my list.

3 - CB Wopamo Osaisai - Stanford
4 - DE/OLB Phillip Hunt - Houston (thanks to Bear for this gem)
4 - OG Cedric Dockery - Texas
5 - C Eric Wood - Louisville
5 - CB DeAndre Wright - New Mexico
5 - OT/OG Dallas Reynolds - BYU
6 - DE/OLB Brandon Swain - West Texas A&M
6 - OG Paul Fanaika - Arizona St.
7 - OT Sean Sester - Purdue
7 - ILB Ronnie Palmer - Arizona
7 - DT Sammie Lee Hill - Stillman

it will be awhile before i post my mock draft, but when you think about offensive linemen, think this first,

hudson houck like offensive linemen with big rear ends, in other words linemen that once they get their hands on you, they can bury you, kinda like nate newton was, larry allen, i see possibly an offensive linemen or linebacker with the first pick, (the linebacker will be taken if carpenter is taken and whatever happens to burnett whom keeps getting injured somewhat).

next thing to remember, most likely this is wade phillips last year. Most likely jason garrett takes over, so you have to consider what garrett wants, garrett won the player he wanted when the cowboys went for felix jones instead of mendenhall in the war room with jerry jones so keep that in mind too,

most obvious need on the cowboys will be an offensive linemen due to fact flozell is getting older, and davis will be 30 next year, and we all saw what happened when kosier got hurt, no backup real good OG.

so obvious needs to me are
OT or OG
linebacker
safety or cb
fullback possiblity, since anderson has been hurt last 2 years
defensive linemen if cowboys dont keep spears or canty
a good backup QB

next, i see the cowboys moving up in the first round, and packaging their picks to move up in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th round, those are the big key rounds where you can get players that can help you

the cowboys will have 11 to 12 draft picks, not sure if we get an compensation pick for nate jones though, doubtful

then dont forget this, most likely a new head coach next year, and a new special teams coach, so special teams players will be some key draft spots.

along with a big kickoff and punt returner specialist, that has been needed in dallas for a long time.

finally, with wade most likely gone, you might see hurd or crayton traded,
most likely see bobby carpenter traded,
maybe tony curits,
possibly mcquistan, since parcells and sparano loved him and reports are that mcquistain isnt doing too good right now

so i see some trades worked with some teams to either move up in the draft or like hostile suggested the cowboys go get beck, whom garrett seemed to like, and jerry jones with one of the picks this year, will recoup with one of the draft picks next year, recoup the 2010 pick he lost due to trade for holland.

Hey Bear, here is a Sammie Lee Hill interview from a draft website I work with. thought you would enjoy it.

*I removed the interviewers name because I did not seek permission to post this interview. If I'm breaking any rules please delete*

Interviewer:: What led you to Stillman out of West Blocton, Alabama?

Sammie Lee Hill: Well, I was overlooked by a whole lot of schools, so my Defensive Coordinator kept calling and calling and that was the last place…my last chance to get a full school scholarship and play football in college.

Interviewer:: Looking at your history, you came out of high school weighing about 270, but what is your current height, weight, and 40 time?

Sammie Lee Hill: 6’4, about 325, and around a 5.00 flat.

Interviewer:: You managed to put on some good weight over the years. Describe the workout routine that helps you maintain optimum size and strength at this point of your career.

Sammie Lee Hill: Pretty much just basic stuff. Bench Press, a lot of running, Squats, and Cleaning: all your basic lifts.

Interviewer: Talking about your scheme now and what you can see, could you see yourself in either a 3-4 or a 4-3 alignment?

Sammie Lee Hill: Yes, sir, I can.

Interviewer:: You went up in Tackles and Tackles for Loss last year and had a fair amount of sacks. Do you pay much attention to stats over the year?

Sammie Lee Hill: Yes, sir.

Interviewer:: Both you and teammate Dre’Mail Hardin received a few preseason honors. Did you see more attention from opposing offensive linemen coming your way in these first two weeks?

Sammie Lee Hill: Yes, sir, I do. There’s a lot less running the ball my way. They do not run the ball my way pretty much.

Interviewer:: We are doing research on you. One of the major headlines you received involved you and two teammates (one current and one former) saving a man from a burning building. Describe the circumstances that led that to happen.

Sammie Lee Hill: Just one night on our way home, we were seeing a burning house on fire. My teammate told me to turn around, because someone might need help and, sure enough, there was a lady outside saying that her father needs help. All we could do was put our hands over our faces and hope that we didn’t get hurt. We looked up, and, well, it was a blessing that we could grab him and protect ourselves so we all were safe?

Interviewer:: How was the local attention after that, because obviously it was a big story in Alabama?

Sammie Lee Hill: There was a lot of media and press coming around after that happened. It was OK. I felt like I didn’t need all that, because I would want somebody to do the same thing for my father or mother in the same situation.

Interviewer:: Did the Webb family contact you after the incident, or was it one of those things were you did your part and that was the end of it?

Sammie Lee Hill: They contacted us and we got everyone together. They wanted to talk to us. It just blew over, I guess.

Interviewer:: That was an interesting story. Back to football. This is a tough year to be a Defensive Tackle in this draft class. Do you feed off of that pressure with the odds stacked against you, being from a small school?

Sammie Lee Hill: You have to, because of the simple fact that you are...I don’t want to say overlooked, because you have D-I players that are supposed to be better, but I gotta make it happen, being from a small school.

Interviewer:: So, What are your individual goals for this season?

Sammie Lee Hill: Working on my passing game, getting the pass rush down as best I can, and getting my numbers as high as I possibly can?

Interviewer:: So, someone like yourself: a lot of I-AA and Division II players make their name at the Combine. Do you think that 40 times, bench press numbers, and the like are overrated?

Sammie Lee Hill: Not at all, sir.

Interviewer:: So, in other words you are going to impress people next year, right?

Sammie Lee Hill: Try my best to.

Interviewer:: The team as a whole: You started the season with a great win against Miles, but yesterday you came up on the short end of a physical running game against Jackson State. What should we expect the rest of the season from the Tigers?

Sammie Lee Hill: Trying our best to stop and we are definitely trying to win the SIAC Conference.

Interviewer:: Describe a day or a week of practice after a win as opposed to a loss.

Sammie Lee Hill: After a win, we stick to the routine and it is not as hostile, but, on the losing end, it’s basically the same thing, but you have to work on your mistakes and learn from what you did wrong.

Interviewer:: Give a shout out to another member or two of your team that deserve attention from the draftniks. Obviously, you are the one from Stillman that they are talking about, but who else deserves attention?

Sammie Lee Hill: Well, you know Dre’Mail. Does Dre’Mail count?

Interviewer:: Yes

Sammie Lee Hill: OK, I would say Dre’Mail, Darren Mack. He got hurt, but if it wasn’t him, Deavion McCoy.

Interviewer:: Who are the most dominant Offensive Linemen that you have faced in your career?

Sammie Lee Hill: The Offensive Tackle from Tuskegee last year. I can’t think of his name. He was a Right Tackle for Tuskegee last year.

Interviewer:: I’d have to look that up, too, actually. What current Defensive Lineman in the NFL do you admire?

Sammie Lee Hill: Being honest, being a Defensive End right now, I usually watch Defensive Ends. I know, like, Warren Sapp.

Interviewer:: So, where do you see yourself at the next level. Do you see yourself inside or outside?

Sammie Lee Hill: Being honest, it really doesn’t matter. Whatever I have to do, I’ll just have to do it.

Interviewer:: Now, we always like to bring up current issues in the NFL to prospective players just to get their opinion. Talk about the penalties that you have seen at the college level for excessive celebration. Do you think that they’ve gone too far?

Sammie Lee Hill: Well, I saw the game with BYU against Washington. As far as that, sometimes you make a big play and you just can’t control yourself. If it’s someone doing back flips, a Superman, or something like that, I could understand that. But something like Washington against BYU…I don’t think you should be penalized for things like that.

Interviewer: One of the buzzwords, when we at the site analyze players, is character. Talk about the focus that Roger Goodell and the NFL have on character.

Sammie Lee Hill: Yes, sir, because if you are presenting money, a lot of money, to these players, character does play a big role. I’m sure that he doesn’t want to go out there and pay these players all that money just so they can mess it up. I think that he’s been handling it really well.

Interviewer:: Self-promote. Why should teams pick you before some of the other Defensive Tackles that they may have listed ahead of you?

Sammie Lee Hill: For my size, I have tremendous athletic ability, I would say. I am hungry to play NFL Football.

Is this a Consensus Draft Services (CDS) interview?? It reads a lot like the kind of questions they ask...

Now I'm gonna have to wander over there and check them out...
