Bill Parcells has dismantled the team he inherited. He is beginning to build his team, his way. Not including the 2005 draft, those players are still under evaluation. We have drafted 48 players since 1999. Out of the eight players drafted in 99, only D. Nguyen remains, he is contemplating retirement. In 2000 we had six draft picks; including the #1 we gave away for Galloway. Not one individual from that draft remains on our roster.
In 2001 it was much of the same. A repeat of the 2000 draft! Except we had a total of ten draft picks that year, including the other #1 we gave away for Galloway. Out of the ten picks that year, we have a total of zero on our roster today. In 2002 we did manage a little better. Out of the nine picks we had that year; two individuals are still on the roster, Roy Williams and A. Gurode. Gurode may be on the bubble.
In 2003, Parcells first draft with the Cowboys. He had seven draft picks, out of the seven only four remain. The four that we do have (Newman, Johnson, Witten and James) are starting in 2005. While Johnson remains a large question mark at center. Along comes 2004 with eight draft picks. Seven of the players are still on the roster. Only one is a starter, J. Jones, one is our third receiver, P. Crayton, while one sits on IR, J. Rogers.
With 48 picks in the last six years, only 14 players remain on our roster. In all we have wasted away 34 picks, 3-#1’s, 5-#2’s, 2-#3’s, 6-#4’s, 3-#5’s, 8-#6’s and 7-#7’s. At least ten of these picks are quality picks, players that should still be on our roster.
I love the Cowboys, yet I hated watching them during the dark (Campo) years. Waiting and hoping to see some type of improvement year after year. With the hiring of Parcells I saw a light at the end of a tunnel. I really expected him to revamp the roster. What I wanted is to see this team improve year after year. Quality players placed in key positions, preparing the team to win it all. A superior team excelling for years to come.
We may not be that team yet. But the pieces are falling into place. Our defense has been vastly improved. This team is better than last years. I’m expecting the same for the offense next year. It hurts to watch this team loose. I hate growing pains, but we are growing. This team is going to get better.
P.S. The only position that does worry me is the QB.
