A Not So Surprising Surprise

The whole game pretty much.

Hard to say any of it qualifies as a surprise.

Wade ****ing up the simplest of things in calling a timeout, and screwing up a little thing called clock management. That's nice. Hey Wade, way to keep that timeout for the end. Way to make sure you had that timeout sitting in your pocket with 0:03 on the clock. That came in real handy, didn't it? Would have been nice to have a little extra time at the end of the game.

Does anyone know what the hell the team was trying when they went into hurry up mode, refused to use a timeout only to snap the ball and sail it out of bounds? Looked like a bit of confusion which isn't shocking considering the team came back from that last timeout and could barely get their **** together. If Dallas would have burned a timeout right after that play, I think it was Dez's crossing route, they could have saved like 15 seconds. Would have left enough time to give them another shot after the run off. I know its a big "if, if" but the clock management was piss poor.

The whole 2-minute drill was very sloppy. The middle was open a lot and yet the WRs were running routes pinned against the sidelines. Someone needs to remind the coaches that those timeouts allow you to go down the middle. Thankfully they figured it out with Austin to give the team a chance.

Garrett reminding us all again that he has such a long way to go. If he ever develops into a guy that is worth his paycheck, odds are Romo, Felix, Austin, Witten and Bryant will all be retired.

I'm sick of waiting for this guy. I'm sick of watching back-to-back fades, back-to-back slants, back-to-back WR screens. Sick of watching the team flail around on short yardage plays. Why would anyone call a pitch to the short side of the field on 3rd and 2? Lets not even consider that the RBs were gutting the Commanders D and that Gurode was single-handedly making Albert his *****. Forget all that info. Why would anyone call a pitch to the short side of the field.

8 carries for Felix. That's pretty. 8 carries for Marion. Just as nice. 5 carries for Choice and 1 for Gronk. 22 total carries. But hey, we attempted 50 passes.

I think Dallas attempted almost as many screen passes or quick passes to WRs as Felix had carries. I remember 6 of them and I don't think Dallas gained more than 10 total yards off those plays. Think about that for a second.

Jason Garrett just isn't the genius he described to be. I'm watching the game with people who don't know who the guy is and all they can ask me is what the hell the OC is doing in Dallas.

"Man, he really likes that quick pass for nothing doesn't he"?

As a whole, the coaching failed the players today. The offensive play calling and the stupid idea of trying to throw a 70 yard hail mary really held this team back. I don't care who had that idea but that person should come out and take full ownership of it. The halftime analysts were practically laughing. I think Rodney Harrison said it was the dumbest thing he's ever seen in a game. I know he doesn't have a good reputation around here but the man played the game for a long time and knows the game.

Once again, high yardage and low points. Same story as last year.

I take my hat off to the defense. They don't make it look pretty all the time but they do just enough to make it happen. They kept this game close for so long that they should get a private jet back to Valley Ranch, full of the fines meats and cheeses in all the land.

The offensive side of the ball might be the dumbest unit in the league. I've never seen a team routinely negate the sort of production that these guys do. If it isn't busted assignment on the OL, it's a penalty. Marty B showed up and drew a penalty on a guy who likely wouldn't have made the play anyway. That was real nice.

How is it so hard to line these guys up? Seriously, what is going on in the huddle that Dallas can't get to the line and still have time to adjust? This happens all the damn time. I don't see any other way than this is Garrett. Get a wristband for Tony and just call a number if your play calls are so intricate that it takes half the play clock to get them in.

Dallas needs to end the games at kicker and bring someone in. Let Beuhler do kick offs. Dallas would have kicked for overtime if he doesn't shank it earlier. McBriar was solid as always. Scandrick can piss up a rope for his stupid penalty. Jenkins saved his *** big time.

Alex Barron is a POS. I want him gone. Call it kneejerk if you want but I don't care. I want him gone. Not because of the penalty. Penalties will happen. I want him gone because he didn't even give effort on that play. He didn't try to block Orakpo. He went straight to a hold. He needs to go, you can't win with guys like that. Send him on the road and find someone who will give you maximum effort when the game is on the line.

Roy Williams made a very tough catch over the middle but also dropped a deep ball because he didn't go after it. If he attacks the ball in the air, the DB can't even contest it. He waited on it and it bounced right off. At this point, I don't think it really matters. Dez will likely get so many more looks than Roy that it's not even worth worrying about who actually starts. Roy looks much better this season and he made a really tough catch, one that he likely wouldn't have made last season but Dez looks to be too damn special to keep off the field.

This team has some issues to work out. For whatever reason, the offense just can't do a damn thing without negating it. Alex Barron is a ****ing bum. I really hope the team sends a message and cuts his ***. He didn't try and didn't care. Find someone willing to be a man. Romo had 1 or 2 bad passes but other then that, he was pretty well on point. His floater at the end should have ended the game. Those plays are unacceptable. Defensively, I think Dallas will be fine. The offense however is having the same trouble scoring that we have all seen before. Lots of yards, lots of penalties, lots of mistakes and miscues........few points.

I knew this game was going to be a ***** but I thought Dallas would persevere and come out on top. Instead, Dallas came out pretty lackluster on offense, made some stupid mistakes on the field and on the sidelines, dug *** hole and tried to climb out too late.

Sucky start to the season. No other way to put it. About a dozen "shoulda, coulda" moments in the game resulting in a loss. Hopefully they get it all figured out and can improve from here on out.

I thought it was cute how Wade tried to call another TO before the final play even though we had none

The guy is clueless

Great post. I don't disagree with anything.

The fact Red kept the Hail Mary on after they accepted the penalty tells you everything we need to know about his ability to be coach in the NFL and understand game situations. There is a REASON teams take a KNEE !! It's because the RISKS outweigh the chance of a reward!

BTW, Mack Brown called Wade and Red and said that was a good play call!!

would have liked to see a close up replay of that, looked strange.

Yeah, I would too but he definitely didn't go up to get it. He just let it come to him.

maybe bbgun can get a clip of it.

crappy job by NBC not having a replay of that.

Uh....where else would you have rather used that time out? That was perfect clock management. It gave us a lot more options when there were 10-15 seconds left. We weren't reliant on making the TD or getting out of bounds.

Of all the things to complain about, that's a bizarre comment.

The 2 minute drill was sloppy? We drove down the field and scored a TD only to have it wiped out by a dumb *** washed up lineman that shouldn't be on the team.

There were two times where they let almost 30 seconds run off the clock between plays. Sure, some time goes by while the play goes but lets say half of the time is lining up. Still looking at 15 seconds saved at either instance.

(1:45) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass short middle to 88-D.Bryant to DAL 34 for 15 yards (30-L.Landry).

(1:18) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass incomplete short left to 88-D.Bryant.

This play, Romo literally snaps the ball and sails it out of bounds.

(1:06) (Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass short right to 11-R.Williams to WAS 49 for 9 yards (23-D.Hall).

:)40) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 9-T.Romo pass short right to 82-J.Witten to WAS 43 for 6 yards (52-R.McIntosh).

That's almost a minute off the clock in those two instances.

I think stopping it just once between these plays would give Dallas enough time to negate the 10-second run off.

Instead, they held the last timeout until the clock was stopped at 0:03.

what the hell

Go back and watch the last 30 seconds of the first half of this past BCS National Championship Game replay.

There is something in the winds of fate that punish coaches severely who do not have enough brains to go to the half when it's time to take a knee and go to the half.

I agree with this completely.

Actually, it's nowhere near a minute off the clock, considering it's about 25 seconds between play snaps and about 10-13 seconds of that is actual game play.

You don't call a timeout in a 2 minute drill when you're on your own 34 yard line with over a minute left. That's terrible clock management.

I edited in that it wasn't a full 30 seconds per but didn't make that note in the total time down below.

Even if you don't call timeout on your own side, why wouldn't you at midfield?

I just don't like the idea of not using timeouts. They essentially didn't use a timeout. Some of that is just how it works out but some of that isn't. They could have given themselves more time at the end if they wouldn't have *****-footed around and called timeout when they got to midfield.

If you have the option of being 1:30 with 2 timeouts on your own 34 and 1:15 with 3 timeouts on your own 34, you pick the latter. This is not rocket science.

What if you have the other option at midfield.

Just under a minute with 1 timeout.

Or 40 seconds with 2 timeouts.

Around 0:53 with 2 timeouts vs. 0:40 with 3 timeouts at mid-field?

Seems like six in one and half dozen in the other to me. It's certainly not a "duh" move one way or the other.

...too many negative plays on the part of Garrett's offense...exacerbated by ones caused by good defense...this equals what you saw tonight...i'm right with you on Jason...it seems that Peyton and Sporano took their playbooks with them when they blew town...his stock sinks lower and lower with each year we bare witness to these Chernobyl-level offensive meltdowns...the series with Barber throwing the HB pass was absolutely frightful...and it set the tone for the debacle that followed...

...it is clear that Dallas does'nt have enough talent to overcome it's stupidity at times...game awareness and game management seem virtually non-existent with both players and coaches...

...they went into Fedex spooked...too worried about protection and not focused on execution...and again we watch Garrett's impatience with running the ball, a fact made even more evident by his continued propensity to use the wrong man at the wrong time...

...i'm beginning to think that Jerry hitched his wagon to the wrong horse (Garrett)...and i'm starting to wonder if Romo can deliver a championship with this offensive line...

...it's ironic that the punditry picks two teams (GB and Dal) with tackle issues as favorites to win it all...Rodgers was running for his life again today after repeated assurances from McCarthy that all was well...Tauscher was awful and Clifton not much better...

...Barron is an abomination on the right side and a return to the form that eventually led to the release of one Flozell Adams...Dallas has another penalty machine to kill drives, along with a negative-play coordinator calling the offense...a stinky mix which will cause the dissolution of marriages and a rise in the number of depressed, hypertensive health cases...:bang2:

...looking like a long season ahead...those guys on offense better be blowing in Columbo's ear, feeding him grapes, and giving him pedicures because the season is riding on it...

Before the two-minute warning, when we were on defense. You can stop the clock without using a timeout when you're on offense, so when you can save time on defense, you'd better do it.

Our first offensive play of the final drive SHOULD have come with 2:09 remaining (timeout stops clock at 2:24, incomplete pass stops clock at 2:20, field goal stops clock at 2:14, kick return stops clock at 2:09). Then after Bryant's first catch, the two-minute warning would have stopped the clock again. Our next snap would have come with 2:00 left instead of 1:18. That's 42 seconds saved right there.

The Commanders didn't stop us on the final drive, we just ran out of time, thanks to our timeout mismanagement. We should have had about 37 seconds left after Barron's holding penalty. Instead, the game was already over.
