A or A+ 2008 draft is what the Cowboys need

Not that the draft hasn't always been an important part of team building. With the outstanding money now being paid to players. Teams more than ever must not miss on players they draft. These players must be able to make the roster and be a factor for years to come. The money spent in FA, must be to keep your own players.

This only happens if you have drafted A or A+ players.

Just because the money is more now that doesnt mean that teams will be better at drafting. Its a crapshoot.

If anything... players in the draft are getting over analyzed which is synthetically altering the perception of their value or lack thereof....

There is value througout the draft.... pick a number... any number... step right up.

I don't know if the Cowboys NEED an A+ or A draft...I just don't think that they can afford to have a D- or F draft. We are pretty deep enough that we don't need a BUNCH of players to play right away, and with the depth a COUPLE draft picks may be LUCKY to even make the team. If we put them on our practice squad, the they will be subject to left open to sign with another team.

I agree with that. It's the D- that's a killer.

We need a corner that can contribute in a big way (this year) and to a lesser extent a WR and RB.

I'd love to see the Cowboys hit the ball out of the ballpark with our draft. Certainly 2 first round picks will help a lot. But drafting mostly around the
28th pick (except for first round) ensures lot of other teams have opportunity get some real good players. We've got to draft smart and get lucky.

Not to disrespect the contributions of pro bowler Nick Folk, but if our major contributions in 2008 come from the bottom part of the draft rather than the top, like the last two years, this board will be very disappointed.

Not even suggesting the last two drafts were flops. But it has not created the kind of production we are looking for in the first two rounds of their rookie years.

If we come away with at least a B rated draft then we'll be in very good shape. If we come away with an A or A+ draft then color me absolutely thrilled with all the extra icing on the cake.

I think we are looking at possibly departing from the ways that this team has been built to possibly reach and target players for positions that will bypass better players available to do it.

I also am concerned that BP and now also Ireland are no longer here to oversee the general mission of the scouting and evaluation process.

These were significant losses in those areas and we have 2 #1's to manage that are not ideally positioned to get high results just drafting from the #22 and #28 spots.

I'm thinking given those issues, if we come out with a B..we will be over the top. But it's going to take some work, some risks and some luck for that to happen.

We had the luck part last year when we took Cleveland's pick for Brady. But then it reveresed itself when it ended up only being #22 and not #1-3 as many hoped.

I don't expect lightning to strike twice with us getting another chance to profit with trading in the draft like that. Maybe, but any advantage we got with having the #22 is going to be negated and we will be severely roasted by the experts unless that #22 turns into some special. I think we all sense that.

And that is the pressure the franchise feels. They need to mushroom this pick into a difference-maker conscencious positive pick or they look like they failed.

The # 28 is what it is..a result of our W-L record. Whatever happens with that will be panned in comparision to the expected results from #22.

So factoring all that investment and expectation into it..I'm nervious with what the braintrust finally decides to do.

I'd be a whole lot more interested in how much Wade Phillips' input factors into the decision process. If we get alot of his input as HC, then I feel much better about things going forward that he knows and sees talent and can evaluate it based on football.

If it's left up to Jones to make the heavy decisions, then I see the 'Wow' factors and the entertainment value of making draft moves and picks that pander to his need to show he can wheel and deal with the best of them and make some risky outcome immenent.

I'm hoping for a cool head and an acute mindtrust to get this done as best we can with the hand that gets dealt to us.

That makes for a wide-open, nail-biting, finger-stumping, fist-pounding, nervous eye-tic Draft Weekend, folks.

IMO.

We have 2 RB spots open, 2 CB spots open and a safety spot open with no current competition so we have spots open, but I don't want to pass on BPA to fill these spots though

Beg all they want at the end of the day we still have 2 CB spots open.

You can never have too many good CB's in this pass happy league.

We need

a CB-should get one at 22
a WR-should get one at 28
a situational running back-get in the 2nd
a bunch of special teamers who might develop into something

That should not be a problem--I would not even mind trading up for a stud CB; but we can get what we need by sitting pat.
