We don't have a starters at FS and RDE. We have hope and weak at that.

I agree with you Fuzzy. We may not have depth at G, although in a pinch Free could move inside for Parnell at RT. I know xwalker speaks highly of Parnell and even Weems so I think there are some options at least.

We don't have a starting edge rusher on the DL, we don't really have any guys that have proven to be at least average at DT outside of Melton and our S position is depending on Wilcox, Johnson and Heath, who was probably the worst starting safety in the league.

Guard is a need, but it can be filled in the third or fourth.

If you want to go long term draft history you can say that about any position.

So Burm...what is the number one need for this team?

Hmmm... draft a QB high to semi-high every year and hype him up during training camp for a year or two through the media and the interwebs- hopefully they flash in the preseasons enough to become a yearly bargaining chip for said team plus interest, so to speak.

Could be a good maneuver, if done right...
The problem is that a current year pick is worth 1 round higher than next year's pick. If you draft a QB in the 3rd then trade him in 2 years then you need to get a 1st just to break even.

I think Selvie is the RDE at this point with Mincey and Crawford at SDE.

Selvie doesn't have that elite quickness you look for in a RDE.

http://nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=67910&draftyear=2010&genpos=DE

He is a try hard guy that is great in a rotation but imminently replaceable.

Mincey is a complete unknown castoff from another team signed for twice the vet minimum. He has had one good year in the league and that was several years ago. Crawford is coming off of a debilitating injury and has shown no indication he was ready to start when he was healthy.

We have a bunch of warm bodies at DE when it should be one of the strongest positions on the team. OG makes a difference in the run game primarily unless they are really bad at pass protection and give guys free lanes. All of our guards can anchor and our center is able to single block most DT in this league which opens up a lot inside. IOW an upgrade at DE would mean a heck of a lot more ot the team than it would at OG.

If we want to succeed at defense then the defensive line has to be the top priority. Don't reach but we can succeed on offense

The fact that backup OG is what I consider the top need is not an indication that I believe that they should draft one in the first round. It just means that they MUST get some backup Guards somewhere. My comment is about roster need an is not specific to the draft. If Davin Joseph checks out and they sign him, then backup OG could move down the list of needs.

I'll say it again, they have Zero depth at OG and they have a 34 year old QB that has had 2 back surgeries in the past year. They are a team with more holes than they are likely to be able to fill in one off-season; therefore, their top priority should be getting their QB to 2015 completely healthy. Regardless of whether they draft an OG in the 1st round or they don't draft one at all, they are highly unlikely to solve all of the issues on the roster this season.

Did I also mention that Bern and Leary have both had injury issues? Bern has had 2 or 3 surgeries in the 2 years that he's been with the Cowboys and was only completely healthy for the 2nd half of 2013 because he had a nagging injury coming out of training camp.

If you're looking for depth, I think what you might need is someone who can play G or C. If they're going to be an active backup on game day, they need to play multiple positions.

Then it is just an issue of semantics of the word 'top.' We need to improve the DL much more than we need to improve the OL and resources should be dedicated proportionally. We need more bodies at guard.
