Panthers drop Kemoeatu
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 5, 2010 2:36 AM ET
With one season left on a five year deal, the Panthers released defensive tackle Ma'ake Kemoeatu Friday morning, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The former Raven tore his Achilles' tendon last July and plans to be ready to play football again by training camp.

The mammoth run stopper had a rocky stay in Carolina that included more disappointment than success. Still, it's hard not to see the gaping holes now on Carolina's defensive line.

"Kemo" will be of interest to 3-4 teams out there willing to take a gamble. There are only so many 345--pound run guys out there.

Maybe we could bring him in on the cheap. We need a better backup option for Ratliff.

Hell yes. Good low-risk, high reward option.

Yes, we need a giant NT type for short yardage situations. I'd definitely bring the guy in for a look. The calf should have already had a lot of rehab by now.

Someone is going to give this guy a chance to start again. I doubt he'd consider playing behind a probowler an attractive option.

I would rather get Ryan Pickett from GB... or stay put and draft Terrence Cody from Alabama U.

This is exactly why you sit an be patient. More news like this comes out every day and with 3 or 4 big NTs on the market now, the price to get one is probably dropping off the cliff right now. Wait a few days and bring one of these guys in for a good price.

He's going to eat himself out of the league like Aaron Gibson did.

Yeah but don't they say that about every big man who plays in the trenches?? I'd rather compare him to Grady Jackson who was also a DT. He was huge but played good in his defensive system ... Aaron Gibson wasn't very good

The Cowboys backup NT will be the one & only Junior Saivii. Unless the front office decides to draft a NT, & outplays Saivii??

This. He would be an upgrade over the current backup.

he is just too much of a risk in the first round. You need to get a surefire quality starter with your first round pick and he would be a backup for at least a few years with high bust potential due to lack of conditioning.

If you're that fat at such a young age while you are prepping for the combine, things probably aren't going to turn out good.

Too old compared to Siavii who turned in a decent year.

I don't know, it seems like a good big NT can play into his early 30s if only asked to play 20-30 snaps a game.

Terrence Cody I believe I have heard he would go later than the first. I wouldn't give a first for him. I'd go OL first definitely.

I can't believe we go through years with two defensive tackles...

Most 4-3 teams carry at least 4, I would say that to be smart we'd have to carry at least 3. As the first two are going to get significant playing time.

And we're not a 4-3 team. I suspect most 3-4 teams keep only two NT's but may have a guy or two that can play there in spot duty, like we had/have. And maybe you keep a NT prospect you like on the PS, just in case of longterm injury.

Keeping 3 NT's is a waste of a roster spot.

Not if one of those can also play DE.
