Cal Poly's Tolver races to San Diego to run 40 again

San Diego native Tre’dale Tolver felt so disappointed with his 4.45-second 40 — despite it being the fastest of any of the eight Cal Poly players performing in front of the pro scouts — that he decided to rush straight home and run again.

After an immediate flight out of San Jose and a midnight ice bath, Tolver made the one-day turnaround to run at another pro day, this one at San Diego State, and improved his time considerably.

Tolver, who had a 40-yard punt return for a touchdown for the Mustangs in a one-point, overtime loss to Wisconsin in November, and is hoping to get a shot in the NFL as a return man, said he was clocked at times ranging from 4.37 to 4.4 seconds Saturday.

“Most of the scouts were saying, ‘Hey, you’re fast. You were fast yesterday. You were fast today, but you took a step in the better direction,’ ” Tolver said.

Tolver was initially going to run at a pro day at Cal Poly in addition to San Diego State, but when the Mustangs’ was folded into San Jose State’s and postponed to the day prior to the Aztecs’ event, Tolver pulled out and intended on running just the one in San Jose.

He has talked about running again at another scouting event in early April but is taking a wait-and-see approach now.

“I’m going to wait and play it by ear,” he said. “Say I don’t hear enough positive feedback or any feedback at all, I will definitely draw my hand again. At this point, it’s all about exposure and good results.”

Barden said his times in San Jose ranged from 4.48 to 4.55, and even though he’s committed to running routes for Mark Sanchez at USC’s pro day on April 1, he might not run another 40 prior to the NFL Draft late next month.
