I don't know if anyone here hosts foreign students but several of our friends do. One of them was just involved in what ended up being an international scam designed to get people illegally into the country.
They had hosted an exchange student from South Korea. She was here for six months. Just as they were about to make the arrangements for her to return, they said her personality changed. Dramatically. She was a very shy and quiet at first but as they began to get her ready to go, she became defiant about not leaving. She refused to make the flight reservations and wouldn't talk to the US agency that helped bring her here. She went to school and tried to get her teachers and even other students parents to agree to let her stay with them as her host family wasn't going to renew her stay. (Not that they could).
What they found out was that the S. Korean agency had the girls family pay a large amount of money with the understanding that they would be able to join her family her in America. When she found out that wasn't true she pitched a fit.
When, with the help of the US agency, they did get the flight reservations made, when they took her to the airport she started a fuss and screamed she wasn't getting on a plane. Security came and it ended up being a big deal. The agency advised our friends to just leave the girl alone at the airport and security would see that she got on the plane.
They had found out that this S. Korean agency has started doing this along with ones in Vietnam as well. Some of the agencies have been banned from doing business in the US.
It was a real hassle with threats from the South Korean agency, the parents and even a call from an official at the S. Korean Consulate in Atlanta.
Anyway, just wanted to let you know if anyone is involved with this.
