A question about our young offensive linemen

I actually was encouraged to hear Garrett acknowledge (in so many words) that they were rebuilding this year - investing in youth. This seems particularly true for our offensive line. Excluding Tyron Smith from the conversation because we are all thrilled to have him, I have a question for those of you who pay more attention to the details than I: how would you rank our young offensive linemen? Who has the most potential? Who has the least?

Bill Nagy
David Arkin
Kevin Kowalski
Phil Costa
Jermey Parnell

Kevin Kowalski

I think these 3 have a good chance at developing. I would hope Dallas adds to the OL in this draft. I was very impressed with the limited action Kowalski saw this year both at C and G

Code for under achieved.

Kowalski = Center next season.
Nagy / Arkin = compete for RIGHT guard spot.

Go after a starter for LEFT guard spot in FA. Don't be afraid to get a SOLID guy for a solid price. I believe that player, will prove to be the missing piece.

Free to RT / Smith to LT (with a SOLID FA guard right next to him.)

Not under-achieved. Closer to the truth with the O-line to say, over achieved. Oh, and then there was the worse area of the team...the DEFENSE. Classic under-achieving bunch.

Couldn't even learn the defense. Their OWN defense. I would love to know with certainty, which players were so mentally challenged. THAT would answer so many questions.

Costa, Nagy and Arkin to the Arena League. Not NFL caliber.

The two guys i like are Kowalski and Parnell. Obviously Parnell is an unknown given his lack of playing time but i like his size and nimble feet he showed during the preseason. Kowalski IMO performed the best out of all the younger OL who played this year excluding Tyron.

Until we see them perform in the preseason, I hate to guess, because the offseason training program could allow one or two to breakaway from the pack.

I like what Kowalski did this season. I think he could start at center or either guard position... but at the same time, it's VERY VERY nice being able to have a guy like him step up in case of injury and not really miss much production.

IMO, I think he deserves a legit shot at a starting job. I wouldn't mind him stepping in for Kosier OR Holland/Dockery or even for Costa.

I think the only Olineman that has secured his job for next season is Tyron Smith. I think the coaches need to make it abundantly clear that the other 4 spots are wide open for whoever wants to work hard and take them.

I agree from what I sawalso when I did see Arkin play the guy has a bit of nasty in him but he needs some serious strength training

It's really hard to say at this early stage, but I'm most positive on

Arkin - seems like good upside potential.

Kowalski - could well have more ability than Costa, esp as Killer was just a rookie this past season. One full off-season should really help him.

Nagy - I think his smarts and versatility (either OG position, blocking TE, perhaps Center) make him an ideal back-up. Perhaps he can develop into another Kosier type player in the next couple of years.

Parnell - Good feet, athletic, and appears to play hard. I think he could be a good swing tackle for us.

Now, guy(s) I'm NOT that high on,

Costa - Has shotgun snaps scare me. I think C Collingsworth said it best during the Giants game a couple of times that "Costa can't give this game away" or something like that. Also, I get the feeling he's too robotic and not fluid enough. He does appear to be a weak link on the OL in my (very) amateur evaluation.

i think you might have one legit starter in that group. most are decent career backups.

I wouldn't be that disappointed to get one starter out of that group. Not bad for a 4th and 7th round pick and 3 UDFAs.
