A question regarding the media and the fan base to the older fans.

I feel like sports coverage now a days is just sports gossip. Fans are coaches and reporters are analysts. It really is ridiculous. Has the media and fan base always been this frustrating?

No, not really. Even when the cowboys were awful it was some what different. I think that has to do more with twitter and all the other new media avenues though. Short news bites replaced actually reporting.

Been a cowboys fan since 1970 so I fit your " vintage fan" criteria....

Agree that its gossip. There's too much show boating.

There used to be more respect shown for individuals and teams in general.

Sure there were paper bags for the Saints, and the lowly Bucs got their share , but not the pile on stuff we see today.

Now it's all about being more outrageous than your media competition

there basically is no sports journalism these days. Actually little journalism as it should be anywhere anymore.

No been a fan since 1960. Really!

This site sometimes has most fair weather fans I have seen.
On to the media way too untrained folks out there. Throw in the bloggers and holy
cow things just get out of hand.
Compare the media to the game.
So many outlets and not enough talent to
go around.
Same with the number of teams today, just not enough players for the number if teams.

I blame Skip Bayless. He started all this back when he was at the Dallas Times-Herald.

No, it didn't use to be this way. Then again, there wasn't an internet or 24 hour sports radio and television. The same thing has happened to all news. It's not just sports.

Outlined against a gray November sky the Four Horsemen rode again.

You know them:

Pestilence, Death, Famine and Meredith.

This was the lead to an article written in the Dallas Morning News by Gary Cartwright in 1965, eviscerating Don Meredith after the Cowboys lost to the Browns.

People love to romanticize about how the writing was so much better back in the day. The above is a reminder that things could be just as low brow as they appear today.

Agree, but do think the internet &cable TV has caused more of this than existed in the print alone days. We didn't have shows picking apart every detail then, and a lot of that coverage didn't go national the way things do today.

Its not just media. And its not just fans. Everything has changed. Believe it or not, back in the day, the GM of an NFL franchise did not give weekly updates as to which opposing player posed a greater threat.
