Wade Phillips should be considered one of the top defensive minds in football. He has put together great defenses wherever he has been and actually has a winning record as a head coach. His two season in Denver he went 9-7 his first season (playoffs) and then drop to 7-9 the second season. Of course he was fired after one losing season.

His three season in Buffalo he was much better and did more with a lesser team. His team went 10-6, 11-5, and 8-8. He went to the playoffs his first two seasons and his defense was ranked in the top 10 all three of his seasons in total yards. They actually were ranked #1 in 1999 when they went 11-5.

Now consider the fact that he had Doug Flutie as his qb his first two seasons they went to the playoffs ( Antwoine Smith and Jonathon Linton as his rbs). In the third season when Flutie got hurt they had Rob Johnson(QB) and Shawn Bryson(RB) as their offensive weapons. Now of course they still had the #3 ranked defense but the offense was limited.

Of course he was fired after that one losing season when your Pro Bowl qb gets hurt.

Even his time with the Chargers can be considered a credit to the kind of impact he can have on a team. Sure the emergence of Brees, LT, and Gates will always be the headlines of the Chargers (although they were there the year before Phillips at 4-12) but Wade Phillips did help the defense go from #31 to #11 in points allowed in his first season. And we all know how good that defense was this season.

I think Wade Phillips not only deserves another chance but I think this would be the ideal opportunity for him. He will be taking over a playoff team with alot of good young players on defense.

I think Wade Phillips will not only be a good hire but the best hire for this team. He probably would be a better HC than Garrett because I just believe that a Head Coach needs more experience in a leadership capacity. Garrett has yet to even call plays for a team and now you want to make him the head coach? How does he deal with the media and T.O? How does he handle it when the team experiences injuries in key position or when the team loses three in a row? How does he motivate the guys to keep fighting?

How does he handle riffs among the team and in the locker room? These are questions that I think he will eventually be able to handle but not right now.

I think jerry is getting the best of both worlds right now. He is getting an excellent coach in Wade Phillips and an up and coming coach in Garrett.

I just think this time it will work. Last time he tried this with Chan Gaily and Dave Campo. Jerry was too involved and it didnt work. This time I think it will.
