A reason to be encouraged

I agree to an extent with the op

But man a win vs the saints would show that this team is not only capable of beating a good team, but beating them on the road.

Being 2 games over 500 would feel like we just won the super bowl around here

Man isn't this the sad truth! :)

OP, prior to the Detroit game, I was thinking the same thing: close losses to good teams, good wins over bad teams. We competed in every game we played, even against good teams, and it gave me a reason to be upbeat at 4-3.

After Detroit, my opinion of this team really soured. Why? Because I've seen this story play out before. Same old stupid penalties, same old poor coaching, same old inability to close out big games. Detroit is the type of game this team has to win for me to feel any confidence about the Cowboys. I don't want to buy into a mirage like I have so many times before.

Now, a win over New Orleans would be the type of signature win to get me irrationally pumped up before the bye.

The loss to Detroit seriously zapped my expectations. It seems like the SOS. However, I agree with the analysis of the OP.

Another encouraging aspect to me for next year anyway is that, if there is a silver lining in this cloud of injuries, it is that we have picked up some off-the-street guys who may actually turn out to be decent 4-3 defensive linemen. This coupled with (hopefully) the complete recovery of Crawford and Bass who has some potential gives us pretty good depth. Also, Spencer should be healed by then and personally I don't believe he's going to command a ton of money on the open market.

Having said that, I would still spend the 1st three picks in next year's draft on defensive and offensive linemen.
