Hey, you should pity us. You have gotten to see numerous SBs, I've gotten to see: Quincy Carter, Clint Stoerner,Ryan Leaf,Anthony Wright,Drew Henson,Chad Hutchinson,Vinny Testeverde,Drew Bledsoe, Randall Cunningham etc. You got to watch and enjoy Jimmy Johnson teams, I got Dave Campo teams.![]()
The thing I dislike about these kinds of threads is that fans end up dissing either player like Aikman or Romo. They are both great and have different skillsets. Aikman was an excellent leader; for regular season games when we were great Aikman was a glorified bus driver. He converted third downs and when we got close, handed it to Emmitt for the TD. Then, at playoff time, more was asked of Aikman and he elevated his game and played absolutely lights out.
Also, I have so enjoyed watching Romo over the years, and think he is a special player. Statistically you would be right in considering him one of the top 5-10 qbs over the past decade. Very consistent. Has not had the team around that Aikman enjoyed particularly running game and defense. Judging by the regular season, he is as good as Aikman or better. The thing we don't know is if he can raise his game for the big games. Cynics would point to his loss in win or go home games, but I think our defense has played a big factor in those, so don't think that we know what Romo could do with the right team around him. Hopefully Romo gets to hoist a Lombardi in the next few years.
The key to understanding the point of the thread was in the first sentence.
Roger says Tony is a great QB lacking talent around him. So the point is do you think Tony wins with the type of talent that Meredith, Staubach, White and Aikman enjoyed. It is not a diss on any of those players.
The knowledgable fan realizes the failure he is labeled with is much more about supporting cast than the choking gene. So knowing that in the salary cap era, with Jerry as GM it is highly unlikely Tony will ever have that much talent around him so I made up the hypothetical situation.
I suppose I could have refined it into:
A great running game...enjoyed by Meredith, Staubach and Aikman. A good running game...White.
A great OL...Aikman. A very good OL...Staubach. A solid OL...White and Meredith.
Great receivers...Aikman, Staubach, White and Meredith.
Great defense...Aikman, Staubach and Meredith. Good defense...White.
Great special teams...Aikman, Staubach and Meredith. Good special teams...White.
If you transported Romo back in time to earlier decades he would absolutely dominate and be better than all the QBs mentioned. But that's true of probably 5-7 other QBs in the league today. They're just better athletes. Think if Ware was transported back to an era where there were 260 pound lineman who were slow as molasses. He'd have 30 sacks in a season.

Today's defensive linemen would absolutely obliterate the 90s offensive lines. You're severely underestimating the difference in talent from the early 90s to today. If you took Romo back to the 90's, it wouldn't be much difference. Actually, the trenches had better players IMO. Romo wouldn't have all these rules in place that helps the passing game so much for him to be better than S Young or, Aikman and the other great QBs of that time.
