After a safety the kicking team has the option to throw the ball or punt it. At least the throw part used to be an option for the team that gave up the safety.

Question: Can the "kicking" team attempt an onside kick?

If so, have you ever seen that?

Not certain it is allowable. But think on this. If your team was ahead by 11 and pinned on the two yard line, wouldn't changing field position be a strategy?

We tried a variant of an onside kick against Philly. We took a safety that game, and then we tried to punt it in a way where we could have a chance at recovering it. Nearly worked too.

After a safety, the rules state there must be a “free kick”. Either a punt or regular kick, or a drop kick. In the pro game, the kicker cannot use a kicking tee. An onside kick is allowed.

I don’t recall seeing anyone try an onside kick after a safety. Probably because most of the time a safety has been scored, the team giving up the safety doesn’t want then also to risk giving up more field position.

The rules I’ve read don’t allow for a pass.
