When Michael Irvin arrived in California to do a live hit for the NFL Network from the Cowboys’ training camp, he sensed something different about his old team.

“There is a nervous anticipation about this season,” the Hall of Fame receiver said.

Less than nine months after Dallas won the NFC East title and advanced to the playoffs for the first time in five years, the Cowboys are faced with the high expectations that have long burdened a franchise with a track record of success spanning generations.

The hype is back in Dallas. It’s palpable in a city where residents are eager to hop on a bandwagon that has been stuck in the mud for 20 years. Around town, talk of a Super Bowl is heard. On the radio. In the streets. At the bars.

“When the Cowboys are winning, everything is better here,” said Roger Staubach, the Cowboys legend and commercial real estate titan. “We are going in the right direction.”

It certainly appears that way. Dallas has a Pro Bowl quarterback, one of the game’s elite receivers, an offensive line believed to be the best in the NFL and a defense with improved personnel.

“But they have to take the next step,” said former Cowboys fullback and Fox television analyst Daryl Johnston. “You never want to take a step back.”...
