A simple fix for this O

Short of firing Linehan/Moore (a clear choice in offseason), there is a fix for this offense. For some reason, we run very little playaction passes with Dak under center. Rather, Dak almost always throws from shotgun, with only playaction fake being a horizontal “read option” action to Zeke. This has two negatives. First, Dak’s footwork is very sloppy when he’s in shotgun. He shuffles and often throws off his back foot or across his body. Second, LBs are not forced to step up to fill (rather, at most they step horizontal with fake to Zeke). Thus, there is less of a hole behind them to throw deep crosses or posts. Which we all see from Dak’s green dot passing chart that he rarely throws and completes (he almost always throws outside the numbers or short middle). The fix? Put Dak under center and get back to running outside zone and FB lead runs, and playaction passes with the same action. It will stress the LB and create natural passing lanes behind them. More importantly, it will force Dak to take a 5- or 7- step drop, plant his back foot, and throw on time and with anticipation. And on zone run action, it has the added benefit of having him dropping back outside the pocket. With Zeke, we ought to have the best playaction passing game in the league. But we rarely use it. Cmon Linehan. Not that difficult.

Get him running more...when he runs, they are more productive...when he is not scripted, they seem to be more productive (I don't have stats on hurry up, just the eye test).....but, when scripted, he holds the ball too long, it is almost that they never want him to throw it over the middle....Dak should be furious with Linehan for potentially costing him millions

You're right about the play action passing. We should be hitting big plays all the time.

Imagine if we had Shannahan calling our offense?

Linehan has to go. Just can't keep a guy here that only gets mediocre results. Dak has not progressed since his rookie year. He's the same guy.

I think Dak has to get involved more in the running game. He cannot stand in the pocket and win games no matter who is running routes.

I was wondering if the Cowboys should have experimented with a different OL alignment. Since you have so many backups in, why not move Collins inside and Flemming to RT rather than bring in Redmond? The Colts exploited the Redmond, Looney, Williams combo in a big way.

The only thing that fixes it is firing Linehan and Moore. Well Garrett too. But that won't happen.

They can do any of what is suggested. But does anyone have the confidence in this staff it would be any better. I don't. Can't fix it or make it batter at this point. Moving Dak around may help temporarily but soon that will be figured out too. Scheme is too simple and predictable. Dak still holds onto the ball too long no matter what, 5 step drop, 7, 3, doesn't matter.

For a team with talent..

we are the worst at making any changes during games.

We have to fail first then change it after the following week.

Never seen a good Cowboy team not be able to analyze in game and attack in another direction.

This team has been like this throughout the Garrett era.

Can daks footwork hold up on a 3to 5 or 7 step drop

Some vid....does his percent trend up or down passing from under center
Stats gotta be there

Collins needs to be replaced this off-season. For how highly touted he was coming out of college I haven't seen it translate into good play at either G or T. Hopefully, Fredrick returns, Smith gets some surgery and returns to form, and Conner bulks up. Then replace Collins and this line will return to form.

Agreed Linehan has to go.

But his replacement must be allowed to bring in his own ideas and playbook. Bring in another guy and using Garrett's stale playbook is of no use, IMO. With Linehan, it's less about playcalling than it is the antiquated playbook he is using to call the plays.

I agree. There should be drives where the offense does 3 play actions in a row just to let the opposing defense know they can and will do it. It will lighten Zeke's carries a bit too. Gotta be as unpredictable as possible.

You want Dak taking 5 to 7 foot drops? Yea lets take a guy who's footwork is horrible and make him use more foot work to setup and throw. That makes absolutely no sense. Shotgun gives Dak more time to set his feet right now and that is not why he holds the ball. He's waiting till he sees seperation and then throwing so even if he drops back 5-7 he won't be ready to fire away on time. He needs to work on releasing the ball about 2.5 seconds. 1 read and go, if it's not there just throw it away. The wide receivers have to trust that dak will actually throw the ball their way so they start giving 100% and get to the right spot. One can tell beasley was frustrated with the late throws last game after he was getting open.

1. Daks footwork is bad on most plays when throwing. He does not do the basics right. This shows lack of coaching or desire or ability or all 3

2. To run playaction you have to turn your back to LOS, then reread the defense and quickly decide where you will go. This requires you to have read the defense at the LOS initially so you know what the options will be. I suspect Dak has a tough time doing that. Again lack of coaching, desire or ability

Actually, I’d say he’s regressed since he’s been here. But sadly, that’s the case with all of the quarterbacks who work under this staff.
