A sports franchise is definitely considered a business

This is for all the people that complain about this and all that I have tried to get them understand this.

Yes, a sports franchise is definitely considered a business. Professional sports teams operate as commercial enterprises that generate revenue through ticket sales, sponsorships, broadcasting rights, merchandise, and more. Even though they provide entertainment and community value, their primary goal is profitability and financial growth, just like any other business.

Even if its considered a business where is it written that a business has to maximize its revenue or melk its customers?

Thats just what people have accepted without questioning it. Because they have been indoctrinated for decades by rich people (call it the establishement if you want) who have an interesst in unregulated capitalism.

Its still in the owners decission how to run his franchise. I dont let Jones out of responsibility this easy. He bought an football team but decided to not be about football but to run it like every other business.

When has anyone in the history of ever said it's NOT a business?
Pure speculation here, but I think the fact that the product sports franchises sell is basically hope, combined with the emotional attachment that begins in childhood, combined with the way it is marketed, creates a fanciful illusion that we are all in this together. We're all on the same team. Makes it seem like less business and more common goal.

Arguably the most brilliant business model in the history of human existence.

The OP is attempting to condition

It is trying to tell you how to think

It doesn't want to talk about reasonable alternatives...which is a red flag

Taking advantage of the young...classy

I have said that in this case it has one aspect that is completely different from a real business in that the final product has nothing to do with the net worth of the corporation......crazy business model right there.

A sports franchise is definitely considered a business

Caution: tl;dr

The Dallas Cowboys franchise is the most profitable in the National Football League. It has held that distinction for a long time.

Unquestionably, the league provides one singular product that its consumers have enjoyed since September 17, 1920: professional football. It is the product that allows it to sell tickets its customers wish to buy. It is the product that motivates customers to purchase merchandise and apparel. It is the product in which corporate radio, print media, television, etc., to invest in its promotion in return for advertising revenue. It is the product which attracts other corporate entities to fund partnerships such as naming rights, etc.

Jerry Jones has capitalized upon a unique opportunity that combined an already established NFL football enriched franchise, entrenched within a long-time football-rich market (e.g. the state of Texas) along with his own, overly vigorous, successful marketing pitches his father instilled within him from childhood. It has been a winning formula for the Joneses' bottom line.

Unfortunately, they have failed to generate even more revenue than their league-best revenue machine has and can create. The product remains the product. While the franchise can be somewhat defined as an outlier and exception, the simple fact is winning usually generates more money than losing. And the standard for winning in all sports is consistently competing for championships.

So, why is it the Joneses cannot further increase their revenue base over their competitors? The possibility exists. It is attainable.

A possible explanation is how the Joneses has managed its product, which is the base for ALL its past, current and future profitability. Yes. The primary goal has already been achieved. Why should they intentionally limit themselves to that level of business achievement when they have not optimized the potential of said goal?

That is a rhetorical question, of which origin began March 29, 1994...

"Sixth, fifth, seventh winningest team in the NFL over the last 15, 20 years."

Number one profitability goal embedded within a 'sixth, fifth, seventh winningest team' mindset.

You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch,
You really are a heel!
You're as cuddly as a cactus,
You're as charming as an eel, Mr. Grinch.

You're a bad banana with a greasy black peel!

I don't think anyone is arguing that they aren't a business. However, they are NOT like other businesses. They are protected by exemptions to Anti Trust laws and even though they may not technically be a monopoly, I think most people would agree that they operate very much like a monopoly. Even though other leagues can form, the barrier to compete with the NFL is very high and no one has ever successfully challenged their status.

All that to say, they do NOT face the same challenges, market pressures, gov't oversight, etc., of other businesses. If Congress is going to grant these privileges for the supposed public good, they should also protect the public from price gouging & shoddy product. Every NFL team can make substantial profit while still operating as a sports team with the goal of winning.

This all comes down to free market variables.

Corporations will focus on increasing revenue as long as the customers continue to pay for it.

Cowboys fans think if they stop buying tickets, it will impact the Cowboys and they will change their ways, but there are several flaws with that mindset.

First, up to a certain point, for every Cowboys fan that stops buying a ticket, a fan from their opponent's team each week will be glad to buy it.

If the number of Cowboys fans purchasing tickets declines beyond the demand from opponent's fans, corporations will buy them for promotional benefits or perks for their clients and/or staff.

If there are any remaining tickets, all the Cowboys have to do is package ticket batches with sponsorship deals to mask the reduction in ticket sales.

A corporation may be willing to spend $100k for a sponsorship with the Cowboys and the Cowboys could easily say, "Hey, we will include 100 free tickets each week" and then price out the tickets as "sold at face value" from the sponsorship deal.

At some point, a sports team would be unable to compensate or hide the lack of demand so they can lower prices or offer special deals for group pricing to compensate.

The reality is that the Cowboys know that ultimately they will have a promising season every so often and with that, both old and new fan interest will surge again and work to "reset" the counters and the whole process will start over again the following year.

I think that's the main point lost on most Cowboys fans.

If the Cowboys win 1 or 2 Super Bowls every 10 years but also have 3 or 4 losing seasons, it would hurt their brand and revenue in those losing seasons.

From a financial standpoint, it is better to have a Cowboys team that is "in the mix" every year through as many weeks as possible than it is to spike 2 or 3 times and flatline 3 or 4 times per decade.

That process of normalization reduces great risks while also reducing great successes.

From a business standpoint, it's smart and logical.

From the standpoint of sports fans, its a weak and pathetic mindset.

"Do everything you can now" is how you win games.

"Make sure you are consistently competitive" is how you make money.

A sports franchise is a business, but does not operate in the same manner as most businesses.

Most sports franchises are owned / purchased by already wealthy individuals. They are not publicly traded. There is no board of directors. The have no fiduciary duty.

While I'm sure every owner loves the money they bring in & the investment, there is usually much more ego involved than sound business practice.

I agree first of all Jerry Jones is not the richest owner he's like the 7th overall there are a lot of billionaire owners in this league and their main goal is to make money no matter what bottom line make money anybody who acts like Jerry is greedy because he wants to make money and they don't feel like he spends enough money but look at all 32 teams how many of them do the all in narrative?

There aren't that many owners that do the high risk free agency. And go after all the high free agencies and make big trades there are very few teams that are willing to do that most teams and even look at the Kansas City Chiefs they want more Super Bowls of late than any team they are a dynasty in the making and they've had to make tough choices they've left great players go we signed Trayvon diggs they let go award not a big mouth that we're talking about they didn't even bother to sign him they stole him from us but let him walk in free agency they've let good linebackers walk good oh and instead of signing hill like we signed lamb they let him walk he's the best receiver in the league at the time..

The Kansas City Chiefs are one of the most inactive teams in free agency I mean they're on par with what Jerry does I'm not saying Jerry is as good as their GM slash Andy Reid and spags they have a better coaching staff they make sure they're coaching can coach up and get more out of their talent that's the big difference but go look at what they've spent the last five years on outside free agents and it might be eye opening for some of y'all..

This is the fact this is not debatable Jerry Jones is not cheap he keeps more of his players than most teams he actually keeps them too long in my opinion and finally he let some of them go and you all complain that he should've kept them and that he's cheap you're never on the same page if it's a way to knock Jerry you knock Jerry and I'm not sticking up for Jerry Jones I'm saying I watch all sports I watch teams in leagues and especially the NFL and most teams operate the same way Jerry does I mean look at the three-year run he did with so little inactivity in the offseason and go 36 wins two division titles from that Howie Roseman all in philosophy how we stole two division titles from him having our starting quarterback go 33 and 8 I believe is his record against the NFC East but we've been to the playoffs 5 out of the last nine years and I know we need more playoffs success but we're one of the most successful regular season teams the last 10 years when you look at win percentage and we're still on prime time it means we're doing something right Jerry's not the worst GM and owner in the league he's just not in the top 10...
There might be 5 teams that are super aggressive in free agency but they're not as good in the draft at some point but Jerry still can make the top half of this league as an owner in GM because he's beating these teams he's just not getting it done in the playoffs but when you put together a team with hardly any free agency and still be able to win that many games and still dominate your division that's more than say I don't know the Cleveland Browns spend a lot of money in free agency so have the giants and recently before ownership change so did Washington and they didn't do anything at all not even in the regular season...

Yes all billionaires run their NFL teams for profit they do it the exact same way and very few get on the aggressive nature of high risk and usually low reward but they're willing to do it and Jerry has it and maybe I wish he would someday have one of those years where he just throws out all caution and just goes for it it doesn't mean you're gonna get the win but at least he'd be trying a little harder but don't act like this ain't a corporation he has 1200 employees just for his one business venture and I believe he knows how to run a business and there's a lot of layers of management he does have consultations everyone says he doesn't know anything about football but there's people on his staff that absolutely do.. He's not throwing darts or using some strange way of running a team and just guessing like everyone thinks and just like the OP said stop acting like the dude's cheap or that he doesn't know what he's doing and he doesn't have a plan he does he just doesn't want to blow the salary cap up and go full all in but most teams don't..

Even the ones that are more active in free agency to go pick up players they're not winning lot of their free agents are not working out I mean even this year everyone wants Washington somehow pick up Samuels and Gallup but they traded away that one of their best defensive lineman for another one they made a parallel move they didn't get better these are risks do you think Samuels and Gallup are gonna have a great season do you think Brandon cooks for the money he got was worth it and then you pick up Mr. blown ACL guy I mean I'm talking about the receivers people wanted here nobody wants that diva coming off an injury there very few that would pay them in New England stupid but we already have lamb they have nobody they're desperate...

So yes Jerry I wish he would do more I'm not on board with supporting him I'm a Dallas cowboy fan so he happens to be the owner but the hate that he has and the disdain act like he doesn't know what he's doing you all are clueless you have no idea how to run a $10 billion sports franchise I'm he has a lot more help within his organization to make sure that's getting done and just because it hasn't worked out doesn't mean they are completely clueless delusional and separated from reality like people say he is there's not any truth to that he just isn't willing to be the gambler he used to be..
It may have been 29 years since they've had super success as far as playoff runs but this team is remaining relative their winning games and I get it but I think the last 10 years and really recently last five years other than last year I think he's improved I think the front office has improved a bit and maybe with this new coaching staff and the changes they're making they have been more aggressive even if it's not the free agent you want they've been three times more active than last offseason and we still have money left more contracts to give out more money to free up and maybe they're gonna make a big move this year we don't know yet...
Again I don't support Jerry,
I'm just saying that hate is ridiculous it's insane yes the criticism I get that some of the criticism is deserving but to say he sucks that he's clueless that he's out of touch you don't realize how many employees he has and how many people he can consult with he doesn't this with a dartboard and a bunch of sticky notes he's not pulling this out of his shower dreams lol...

Like most businesses, the Dallas Cowboys need to be as competitive as possible, vs. other teams in the NFL. Once the fans become sick and tired of their lackadaisical ways, business falters. I don't think they realize how badly many of their fans are feeling about their team. The FO will likely wait until their profits aren't nearly as satisfactory as they have been in the past.

Perhaps a time will come when the fans have seen enough and lose interest in remaining faithful fans. Until that time comes, Jerry and Stephen will continue being content to be just as lazy about being as competitive as their fans are willing to accept. Once their profits decline enough, they'll likely wake up to what they really need to do to return to better times.

It is a business no doubt. The we’ll run teams also win games. The ones that are poorly run don’t win. Jerry wins on the business side but loses on wins. So he’s good at part of his business and bad at another part. That’s why few owners are also GM. Hire the smartest people is what a goid business does

If Purposefully losing in playoffs generates more money than winning a SB...

What is it? It's not a sport anymore...it's a cash cow.

I'll still watch...but got no emotion in the winning or losing aspect of it

Money ruined the Dallas Cowboys, or the Jones clan. But whatever

hey you might not like long winded post that you don't have to read but I'm going to give my opinion it is what it is I mean people go overboard and have about 50 posts with less characters per post but in the end they post more than I do here I usually get a good rant or two in early in the day and then I'm out I don't spend all day at this place when I'm on my early morning coffee I'll definitely get up on the soapbox and give a rant that's for damn sure..

And I don't lose sleep over people not liking me because of it or I'm not the popular person in here because I don't go along with the rest of the pitchfork and torch crowd they hate Jerry and everything that he does..

and you can think talk to text LOL BTW i do post on twitter X.its difficult but i can hold back if i have too :).

All these posters acting like they have known winning is secondary are side stepping a few key points

All these boards are filled with posters that side step 90% of the time

Must be a lot of team employees under NDAs or its all fake. Whatever

Ceedee looks frustrated on the field, like he wants to win.

He must be NDA'd

All these players chose money to hang at rim

This board is busy side stepping answering key questions lol

Absolutely.

I find it mindnumbingly stupid when players complain about being treated like a resource, but then complain when they aren't paid enough. Hey, do you want to be paid like a resource or not?
