A Strategy For Andrew Luck

But is there a rule to say that you can only offer one pick ? That is the part I can't really remember. I guess I could look at the rule book, but it is upstairs and I am feeling super lazy tonight. Long day brother.
1 pick.

Go through all that trouble for AJ Green and a couple of rookie O-lineman ?

It ain't worth it.

There are going to be plenty of receivers and lineman in free agency who are not only young enough, but are going to have experience, which is what Luck could use more than what Green and/or any rookie linemen are going to bring to the table. Remember, there are potentialy 215 unrestricted free agents who are entering their 6th season ( more or less because I don't know how many signed long term contracts last year as opposed to their qualifying offers ) in the league but because of the no cap years rules, they didn't go anywhere last season ( only 1 sign with another team ). That's not counting the other players who are entering their 5th seasons and most likely are going to be free agents as well under the new CBA.

Keeping Steve Smith is a good first step, but signing somebody like, for example, Vincent Jackson, who will not be back wtih the Chargers next season ( bad blood ) and is very familiar with Rivera, is a natural fit. Jackson is still a young player and would produce more than AJ Green would. They could also go after somebody like Carl Nicks from the Saints in order to address their O-line problems right away.
What trouble? All it is doing is giving the team you are resigned to go to another top pick.

Wouldnt the team that did this have a problem fitting it under the rookie cap that gets assigned to teams....Trying to fit 2 number ones would be interesting.

Currently there is no cap. If one gets done you can bet your socks they can make the numbers work somehow. The cap is not a wall, it's a bump in the road at best.

Hilarious that you posted this because I was actually thinking about this after Luck said he was staying in school. How could there be a rule against it? The league wouldn't be able to prove squat. Luck would just say, hey, I changed my mind. Or he could say he was waiting to see what would happen with the CBA and this bought him more time.

He did not enter the Draft. We all know this. It is now too late for him to declare this year, but not too late for him to play in the NFL. If I were Andrew I would ask the Panthers to select AJ Green with the first pick and some OL for rounds 2 and 3. I would ask them to somehow retain Steve Smith.

I would tell them if they did that I would go ahead and hire an agent so that I was in the Supplemental Draft.

Just wondering really why no player guaranteed the #1 pick has ever thought of doing this if you're resigned to the fact you're going to the worst team in the NFL.

Well, what happens if Carolina doesn't end up with the pick ?

The season is over and Carolina won 2 games. Who leapfrogs them?

But Luck would have to declare before the order in the supplemental draft is set, doesn't he ?

Supplemental Draft Process
How the Supplemental Draft Works
By James Alder, About.com Guide

The Supplemental Draft, is designed to allow underclassmen --who did not petition the league for early entry before the NFL Draft deadline but find themselves ineligible for the upcoming college season-- a vehicle for entering the NFL. The supplemental draft is held after the traditional NFL Draft and before each season begins.

The league uses a weighted three-step, semi-lottery system to determine the order of the supplemental draft as follows:

•Teams with six wins or less participate in the first lottery for the top supplemental draft picks. The team that posted the worst record among that group is given a weighted advantage over the following team, with each team's "weight" being decreased on down the line until reaching the team with the best record in the group.

.... After the order is determined, each team submits to the league the name of the player(s) they are interested in, as well as the round of the supplemental draft they would like to choose them in. The team that submits the highest bid is awarded rights to the player. If more than one team bids a pick from the same round, the team with the highest pick in the round wins out.

would probably win the lottery, but it's huge risk for both of them that could backfire big time. I'm assuming that once Luck declares for the supplemental, that's it, there's no turning back and if by some chance, Carolina doesn't win the pick, then they just spent THE #1 pick of the regular draft on a player who wasn't probably worth it to begin with OR they didn't have a huge need for.

In other words, what that dummy Jimmy Johnson did in 1989 for the Dallas Cowboys, only in a reverse... sort of.

He's still a beast. You'd have a down year if you had to work with the likes of Matt Moore and Jimmy Clausen with lame duck ownership too.

Injury prone and getting older. Trade his value. Although, I think it is a contract year for him upcoming. He was sloppy this season.

Ehh...From what I hear these rookies are going to have to wait to get signed. The Owners and Players want a cap on rookies. I won't take this bet because the Panthers unloaded all of their big contracts, except their worst one. And that would be Chris Gamble. They might have the money to spend...but might have to trade down some.

Doesn't read like it has to be only one pick offered to me.

The Panthers do not have a second rounder...The Bills do.
It is one pick.

It's one pick and the team with the highest pick wins the bid or " drafts first ".

It's like the waiver wire procedure, except there's a restricted lottery involved before the order is set.

the reason it doesn't happen more often is money and circumstances. paying two #1 choices is tough for a lot of teams.

I don't think the cap is the problem, it may have something to do with your rookie salary pool.
